It's been some years, but I used to have a lot of use for Tarot readings. And I'm thinking about taking a new look at it, now from a masonic perspective. Possibly getting a new deck with FM-symbolism (I've mainly been working with Crowley's). I found these two: Square and Compasses and Masonic Tarot. Another option might be something more hermetic or Kabbalistic in style. Any thoughts or practical experience? Both in regards to specific decks and on how it might work as a masonic tool. (I'm a little uncertain as to whether this is suitably esoteric, or perhaps should be Kabbalistic. Mods, feel free to move.)

Munkholt, Re Tarot packs, there are so many to choose from, I have 130 at present, that one does not dwell on a particular pack to gain specific results, but more on the packs that resonate with you yourself.
I do have the "masonic" one myself and find it rather one man's view of the system.
It would be more helpfull to yourself to study the Major Arcana Symbolism, especially the first 6 cards - Fool to Hierophant - to start with. The High Priestess is particularly appropriate, and a good variety of packs should be investigated to observe different approaches to it's symbolism.
Whilst doing that try to equate the allegory in the craft with what you find in the cards.
I would also reccommend the BOTA pack, that by Paul Foster Case, and the book "Jewels of the Wise" Epiphany Press, with it's companion "Keystone of Tarot Symbols". Eileen Connolly's Books are also excellent plus "The Underground Stream" by Christine Payne-Towler.

Thank you very much. I agree, Tarot is very much a matter of resonance, and that's why I considered using it more as a tool. Less intuitively, and more "okay, look at this illustration - what does this relate to in the lodge ..." But I'll go with your advice and stick to my usual method, ie. using my own perception as a starting point. B.O.T.A.: Did you colour yours? I was actually considering constructing my own Major Arcana based on my experiences as I progress through the degress. Do my own illustrations, and include the symbols that I paid particularly notice to - expanding the range of elements as I observe new facets of the rituals. Might be too much work, but I will definitely try to keep some sort of "diary", hopefully illustrated.

I purchased my first Tarot set a couple of weeks ago - along with a beginners guide.
Not had too much time to sit down and work with them yet.

Yes Munkholt I photocopied several sets of the black & white, so that I could experiment with:
one card at a time, full colour
Each card but only the same colour - ie yellow on all cards. then the red parts etc.
experimenting with different colours than suggested.
I still have a long way to go with this, but it does make you understand them better.

Leonardo
What is the provenance of the "gypsy" tarot?
I wonder if the images are those of an outsider.
Cheers

Cheers Russell Not sure about their origins or if the designer was an "outsider." but the images of the caravan and some other "gypsy" type things look fairly accurate. Lovely set of cards, though.

Does the Buckland of the title refer, by any chance, to Raymond Buckland? He is an influential author on Wicca, indeed he may even have coined the term, considering that much of the flavour of Neo-Paganism is quite Celtic in tenor, but Wicca is Old English, and Buckland wrote The Tree: The Complete Book of Saxon Witchcraft. www.controverscial.com/Raymond%20Buckland.htm

Does the Buckland of the title refer, by any chance, to Raymond Buckland? It certainly is possible but to be perfectly honest I'm not sure. But 10/10 for keen observation

Laying upon sick people to cure them is an ancient practice. Here is a raising:
1 Kings 17:21
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said: ‘O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come back into him.’ 22And the LORD hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back into him, and he revived.

I have never used the Marseilles Tarot. I think the older versions are very badly printed, and the newer ones have been over-modernized. I do, however, own Jodorowsky's complete redrawing of the Tarot, because it is a meeting of a great mind with a primeval deck.
I found out today that there are very few books in English on the Marseilles Tarot. However, the French love the deck and there are scores of books in French about it. Moreover, these books are available very cheaply on the UK Ebay site, you have to search for Tarot de Marseille in Books.
