Picking up from the Horoscope thread Stewart, Have a look at C.C. Zain'S - Ancient Masonry - The Spiritual Meaning of Masonic Degrees, Rituals and Symbols.- To quote From Chapter 2 - Entered Apprectice and the Planets - The Ancient Masons ever striving to solve the mysteries of God and man, seeking to peer beneath the veil of the Virgin Isis...... The blazing gems of heaven were made the subject of observation and study... It was found that few of the heavenly bodies rapidly change their relative positions. At a much later date they named the planets, meaning wanderers. These wandering orbs with the exception of the newly discovered Pluto, all keep within the boundry of a path some 18 Degrees in width that encircles the celestial Sphere. EAch has an influence and an individuality of its own...... 2 study questions from chapter 1 - Introduction 1 )What is the Astrological significence of the square and of the Compass 2) Of the ten Astrological aspects, which one is not measured in the plane of the Zodiac... Anybody care to answer

I am studying astrology at the mo, but cannot answer your question Bro.
Do you have a link to that book (if it can be found online?).
If anyone has the date and time of the birth of UGLE we could even try to make a chart here and interpret it.
II degree business...

I did buy it from amazon a couple of years ago - Also have a look here www.light.org/store.php3Zain appears to be an interesting man whos work could well be worth study. AT the back of the book there are study question - where I selected the two questions - am still working on the answers - it should be noted they were related to the introduction chapter. A question relating back to Chapter 4 - What does each rap of the gavel indicate. I might add I do not accept everything I read - but I do very much like to read other peoples views and conclusions - even when I disagree it does make one think from different angles i

The significance of Degree knocks I would be cautious upon, because they do vary from place to place.
The square and compasses are an illustration of the Hermetic aphorism, As above, so below: astronomy (and astrology, the two were originally identical) informs geometry. Heaven's law (astronomy) and regularity is scaled down to the earthly measure (geometry), and thus all horizontals, levels and right angles are adjusted to be in accord with celestial order. In a moral sense, the divine rule of conduct is applied by us to our works as human beings.

OK an answer to question 1. Astrological Significance of the compass. The fact, the Sun, Moon and planets do not move in the same plane, but describe orbits and measure their inclination to each other - the Compass is required - The Compass being an instrument used to draw ciercles embodies the idea of a male force meeting a female force at an angle, this angle being measured in different planes. Astrological Significance of the Squeare. The angle at which the rays of the Sun, Moon and Planets meet were to be found to have an influence upon life and mundane affairs. Thus in astrological calculations it is necessary to measure and record these angles. And it is found that two different sets of measurements must be taken. The first set is measured entirely in the plane of the Ecliptic regardless of the latitude of the orbs. In this manner the Celestial Longitudes of the heavenly bodies are found. With the exception of" Parallel of Declination" , those most potent influnces upon the mundane life for good and evill are called "Aspects" The Square being an instrument suited to the measurement of plane surfaces, embodies the idea of a vertical line, or positive force, meeting a horizontal line, or negative force at an angle which is measured in a single plane. And in practical Astrology this is the first step, for the zodiacal positions of the sun, moon and planetsare found, their aspects calculated, as if they all moved in the plane of the Ecliptic. Strange as it may seem to the unitiated, with but one exception, it is these aspects disregarding latitude, that are found potent in the affairs of life.
For the Knocks of the gavel, don't panic Ruff - they indicate that "the Will" is to operate on more than one level

I thought (judging from how often the IG has to surreptitiously rap in response to his own knocks) they indicate that the Tyler is away at the bar.

Ah yes Ruff, you too have that problem eh? When IG I often had to run the "Virtual Tyler" program too! Now as a Tyler myself I bring a book and a bag of sweets and sit outside to knock as needed.
