Stewart can answer if he wants... Stewart would not have a clue. I have spent very little time thinking about what happens in Lodge in terms of perambulations. I would guess that the first could represent coming down to this existence and leading your Earthly life, the second opening your heart and realising that there is more to life than perhaps meets the eye, while the third could represent the new inspiration being found within you as you consciously decide to take the next step in your personal journey that will in time help you complete your circle of life. But that could be complete bo***cks, it is however the best that I can come up with off the cuff. Perhaps once I have gone through such perambulations they will make sense to me. In the mean time I sit back and read with interest.

The answer partly depends on the ritual used, and how is to determine what constitutes a perambulation.
For example, in the second degree, the candidate goes around a full circle... errr, square first to the Junior Warden, then to the West again, then another full circle/square to the Senior Warden, then, after the SW presents him to the Master, goes to the East, receives the secrets, and demonstrates those to each of the Wardens. So the number of perambulations is also three.
Yet, a number of other perambulations also occur each time the candidate needs to move from place to place (Working Tools, Tracing Board, Badge, etc) increasing the actual number of perambulations. The question may be asked as to whether these form intrinsic part of the symbolic work in perambulating, or whether they are more incidental to the specific development of local work, and may therefore be altered easily.
Then there is the specific working in different Constitutions or rituals. For example, the Besant ritual used in many LDH Lodges also includes what is effectively another perambulation in which the 'tablets' are read by the candidate.
So two questions as to perambulations are significant. The first is what, of the movement within the ritual work, is actually determined to be actual perambulation (and even in the first degree, the Besant ritual is here more explicit as to what these are supposed to represent); and secondly, which ritual work is being worked.

As JMD says it varies with the Ritual in use and the Degree being worked. Some would say that they don't Perambulate properly at all in Emulation!
