I wasn't saying that power is what I'm interested in getting. Or rather, I may not have intended to say that. The trouble with desire is that it will not be thwarted: suppress it and it will simply pop back up again, somewhere else and probably in a very distorted form. If you do desire power, at least admit it, and deal with it.
All men desire power, especially the powerless. It is often in the midst of our most desperate attempts to grasp power that we simultaneously enact the worst deeds imaginable, and put ourselves irrevocably out of power. And all that is left is the desire, in the face of everything, to perpetrate the impotent tyranny which is itself the most horrifying narcotic. Or else horror of tyranny, and the inverted desire to reject power entirely.
Desiring not to desire is, unfortunately, still desire, Bevan. Consider the first two of the Four Noble Truths: Life means suffering; the origin of suffering is attachment. You cannot rid yourself of attachment if there is still something you desire. Rid yourself of the desire not to desire power, and power will be yours.

Brethren
"Surely all that any magical society, esoteric fraternity, etc can do is offer you tools."
Well Stewart, I have seen tools that had hidden agendas. That is, the use of the tool implicitly introduced, for example, ways of doing things. And those ways while successful might be more suited to one higher agenda than another.
Hence some groups may be seduced by a higher entity suggesting and then empowering techniques - so that you appear to be doing the work yourself but are not.
So I suggest tools are not neutral.
"but I do agree that those of the Right Hand Path should work to preserve Order and Harmony in both the Microcosm and the Macrocosm."
Taylorsman,
Here we have the implicit statement that if the tools do not support Order and Harmony then they are not suitable for us. I agree. This is a fundamental test of any tool. What agendas do they support and what qualities are implicit in them.
For example, the chaos related techniques may work quite well where we actually have the power but have forgotten. But as we move to the edge of our power envelope, do we still demand as we have learned, but to no avail?
What then? Are we children shouting through the playground fence? Or are we chaos imposing itself on kingdoms that are supposed to cooperate with us?
And of course, over what do we wish to have power? We might start with power over our own thoughts and desires.
Cheers
Russell

Anyway, Carrol would not make a good buddhist and R.A.Wilson and him won't let me say any form of the verb "to be". Bastards! I won't be handing over my mind (and money) to them. It's called E-Prime, and there's a thread on it on another forum that I frequent.

In one of your Co-Masonic Lodges if supernatural entities are drawn there by the activities, layout, impedimenta, etc, Taylorsman, a further comment on these entities. " The Deva representative of the RWM, is a highly developed and very capable, and the moment that he arrives with his cohort of assistant Deva's and elementals he takes full charge of the whole of the proceedings .........Immediately after the RWM acting in the name of T.G.A.o.T.U declares the lodge duly open and all the lights are turned fully on. It is not only the physical light that leaps forth at this moment, for as the RWM says the opening words his Deva represenative also lifts hiss staff and all the seven groups of assastant spirits, which until now have been seen even by clairvoyant sight as merely luminois clouds, flash out into their full brilliancy. At once each group is connected by a line of living light with the physical official over whom it hovers, and through this line it's force is poured down upon him whenever he is called upon to take part in the ceremony." Does that help a little ;D
