I am fairly new to Masonry and I was hoping someone could answer a question for me. What is the difference between the different types of study for Kabbala (Thelema, Hermetic....) and how does it tie in with Masonry ? I'm sorry if this is a silly or basic question but I am just starting my path of Knowledge.
Thank you,

Hi there, I am fairly new to Masonry and I was hoping someone could answer a question for me. What is the difference between the different types of study for Kabbala (Thelema, Hermetic....) and how does it tie in with Masonry ? I'm sorry if this is a silly or basic question but I am just starting my path of Knowledge. Silly question? Only the questions you don't ask are silly! I'm relatively new to Masonry myself, but am a little bit more experienced with the Qabalah - although there are Brn. on this forum who have far more in-depth knowledge than I do! The basic differences to my knowledge are between Kabbalah, Cabala and Qabalah. Kabbalah refers to the original Judaic system, Cabala is the Christianised version of, and the Qabalah is the mystical approach to it as promulgated in the Order of the Golden Dawn and the likes. There are so many Qabalistic references in Freemasonry that I hardly know where to start! Just of the top of my heart - the notion of pillars: the three pillars of the Tree of Life: Beauty, Wisdom & Strength. The notion of 3 great lights: the supernals Kether, Chockmah and Binah. The Tarot is believed to be a visual aid to learning the Qabalah (I'm sure JMD will correct me if get this wrong*G*). Take a look at the High Priestess card - she's sat between two pillars marked B and J. Ring a bell? The Qabalah, like Freemasonry, is a system that will accommodate any spiritual background. Any spiritual notion can be placed on the Tree of Life and make sense in relation to another idea from what may seem a diametrically opposed spiritual system. It's a framework to work within; a map to spiritual growth and eventually, back to our Origin. There's a couple of chaps out here who can tell you more about the Hermetic approach, so over to them! Cora
