I noticed a man with a lot of arm tattoos the other day and had some impression of an entity attached to one of the tattoos
So I started to think about what tattoos are used for. Often they indicate links to groups or entities.
I recall a young Maori explaining that his largest tattoo was (of?) his grandmother. And of course it was commonplace to have a "Mother" tattoo two generations ago.
And tattoos are used to indicate membership of groups (gestalts?)
And in occult traditions sigils are used to invoke entities
So I wonder if anyone has observed examples of tattoos serving to connect the consciousness of the wearer to the entity or principle depicted.
Cheers

most people i know choose their tattoo design as a means of expressing a connection allready there. and i would say it is very powerfull in affirming that connection. u might say that it marks a point where the content of the design is something that has come from something the person might enjoy or be interested in to something that person wishes to identify with. so ive been wondering about tattooing symbolism. in particular using the hebrew letters to create a sort of grid symbolicly mirroring the universe kinda like the 'cube of space'.that would reenforce ideas such as 'as above so below' and 'man as the ultimate symbol of nature' and things like that. perhaps serving to help synchronise the person with the enviroment.

It is an interesting idea that might well have some effect
If so, you might consider using permanent marker pens for the first few versions - just while you get a feel for what sort of interface you want to imprint upon your body
Indeed the sort of interface you want might change each decade

My girlfriends once dared me to get a tattoo ... one of those that wear off in a week or two. I got one of a small butterfly and put is behind my left ankle bone. Made me feel quite light and cheery. My feet did not touch the ground?

sounds plausible enuff to me. if thats a strong association you have with the image, then thats the signal your sending to your subconciouss. thats how sigil magick works, and i would say placing a sigil on ones person like that adds alot of power to that dynamic.
the question in this case is wether it is the association or if it is more a universal archetype thing. if its archetypal, then the symbols could work without the need for an understanding of them. wich makes me rethink my previous post.
on another note, ive also wondered the same thing about tarot cards as i was considering them as a basis for ritual work. one idea i had was to pick a card wich you would want to identify with, and put it in your pocket and ritualy reminding yourself that u carry it. seems like it would be a similar, though perhaps weaker version of the same thing; the wearing of a symbol.
