I thought I'd open this up as a new thread as it doesn't have much to do with green neon banners ;D And why have some posters changed their names from those on TFM where I have lurked for a long time? Are they embarrassed at moving? Well Sid, the reason I changed mine is quite simple. Once upon a time, many years ago, I was quite naive about the internet, and in the spirit of openness (and flush with pride at this wonderful organisation) I joined a forum with my real name as my forum name. I am perfectly happy for those I converse with in a private forum to know exactly who I am and have nothing to hide. Unfortunately there are others out there with less honourable intentions. My posts, together with my name, have been found on Freemasonrywatch (copied I hasten to add without my prior knowledge or agreement) and a simple search on google will bring up my name associated with a variety of postings. I decided I was not comfortable with this arrangement, and although I haven't changed my username in the original forum I have here. My tag line is the same and it's pretty clear who I am. Others may have a different reason, but I wouldn't have thought it would be anything more sinister than just fancying a change!

I dropped the 'g' off the end of my usual interwebby handle, the only reason the 'g' was there was because the other place had a four character minimum for the user id. I've also stopped putting the name of my mother lodge in my signature - a google search for the name brought up every posting I had made at the other place.

I didn't bother changing my name since I never really said anything important enough for anybody else to care to quote/steal!!

Well, I am still Leonardo I have posted on other fora (love that word) using my actual name, but I feel more at ease using an alias. I did think about posting under my "proper" name when I came to this site but I'd feel a bit funny.

It's good that Bod changed his nickname, as I'd previously been laughingly saying "dodgy bod-g" every time I read his name. I can understand where Bill is coming from - it's a realisation I made some years ago when I first started using the communal aspect of the Internet (1989, I think). One should keep one's personal identity off the front page, as it were. I consider it fine to have in a profile (where additional clicks are required, and aren't subject to automated spidering by the likes of Google, etc). Ultimately, just remember you're advertising these personal facts to every potential nutjob on the planet. Be cautious (ooooh!), but don't be paranoid.

Regretfully Steve and I haven't got together over a pint yet, but you never know... . I have used Trinityman elsewhere and quite like it as it highlights an aspect of my freemasonry that I find very important (my mother lodge). I suspect Taylorman chose his handle for exactly the same reasons.

No, Bill and I have never met and I don't see me going up to the Midlands in the foreseeable future so unless he is attending a London Lodge or Chapter or happens to be in The Pillars at some time? I chose my new handle as I really enjoy Taylor's Ritual, its Floorwork, Squaring, Words and their pronounciation, etc. One does NOT have to be "Gideon of the Yard" to work out who I am from the Other Place.

Lee and gang I think the name is fine the way it is. But if you are changing it what about about "Masonic Forum of Truth and Light" or "Masonic Path of Enlightenement" Or, and I like this one, "Masonic Pathway to Iner light" Just a few thoughts Happy New Year

Let's leave it as it is. I think the name is just fine, and NO, I DIDN'T suggest it.
People have come to know us as The Masonic Forum of Light, just as they know another Forum by its well known name.
I can see little benefit from changing the name and look what has happened to some far more famous organisations when they have departed from what was known to a new name and logo, remember Consignia and what a disaster that was.
The final decision lies with Lee (Staffs) but I strongly urge "If it ain't broke DON'T FIX IT!"

Matt, there sure is a lot of chat and chatter here and there is also quite a bitt of learning material that we can all share which is more than some lodges do in the area of masonic education. I presume your suggestion was light hearted but i have no intention of changing the name of the forum as suggested was the case by Leo. I feel that the name we have is appropriate to the type of discussions we enter into here. Although some of it s idle chit chat this is the purpose of the chaff board and this is nice and light hearted and helps us all to get to know each other quite well and stops the more serious threads from wandering too far off topic causing deletion and heavy moderating which we have all seen elsewhere,
However all criticisms and opinions are appreciated and any persons point of view is fully respected,

Of course my response was light-hearted. I thought the ;D gave it away. ;D
Changing the name would be silly. It's a Masonic forum and Freemasonry has symbolism with light.
So as my old foreman once told me: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
