Leo: mwahaha! The basics of what exactly? When I was at uni I found the absolutely brilliant (at the time) Roadmap to the Internet by Patrick Crispen. It became my standard response when someone would ask me about the Internet. As you can see from the link, he's not updated it in nearly a decade, so it's every-so-slightly outdated. However, it's still largely valid... and I wish everyone would read it anyway - especially the Netiquette section. Everything else would be Google and about.com from my perspective, and there are myriad "how does it work" sites about the place. There may also be things you can gain from "intro to computing" courses run by universities. Google will probably find them for you - you'll be amazed how much uni coursework has been spidered by Google. Good luck. ;D

Start with the manual marked 'Life - vol. 1'..... ;D Not a website as such, but a suggestion. Check out your local library or adult education centre, especially if you come back to england. The government is big on spending money on adult learning, and they all offer beginners courses in various aspects of IT. I'm sure there is similar provision in Ireland, after all one Intel and Dell are both based there as are many other sucessful IT firms, and Baltimore... The tricky part is knowing what you want to learn. You could do a PC hardware/maintenance course that would go into the nuts and bolts of the electric spaghetti, or web design, or networking (much, much longer spaghetti - and pretty colours too!). My mother has done courses on databases, spreadsheets, word processing, etc all through the adult learning centre. If you want to do it to learn I wouldn't worry too much about the certification side of it - learn for fun. If you're looking to do it as a job, that different. The other option is a mind meld..... Its a huge subject, and it is fascinating (well I think so).

How can I put a link, hiding the URL as Jumile did with "Roadmap to the Internet"?
