Are there any brothers on TLR from lodges in London or Ockbrook (Derbyshire), England? I plan on visiting London and my extended family in Ockbrook this January, and I would very much enjoy visiting an English lodge or two in addition to any other sites of masonic interest in those areas. Any points of contact shall be greatly appreciated. Assuming I can find a suitable ticket, I plan to visit the first two weeks of January.
Fraternal Regards,
Michael Earlewood #371 South Carolina, A.F.M.

Welcome brother
I am in London, but we don't have a lodge meeting in January, so I can't offer you a visit I'm afraid.
I would suggest you bring some waterproof, and warm clothing - for both places you'll be visiting!
Good luck with your search.

In the absence of Bro Michael's reply, I can say that from his post on TLR he is an EA (his post was in the tyled EA forum there) and he expects to be an MM by the time of his visit in January. On TLR, I suggested he visit the UGLE website for more information, cautioned him about the protocol issue of direct contact if his lodge is non-UGLE, and pointed him to a few UK-centric fora. This of course being one of them. So please... if anyone has a London/Home County or Derbyshire lodge meeting in January, he'll be all ears. ;D

Sorry for the delay in my reply. As Brother Jumile stated, I am presently an EA. I will take my FC on Monday. I am scheduled to take the MM degree December 13th. Thus, provided all goes well, I will be a MM by the time I visit the UK.
I'm a law student in the US (or Barrister by your terminology, I suppose). My grandfathers were both Masons (deceased), and my father's side of the family is from Ockbrook. I have extended family there now, though I don't really know them and cannot say whether any of them are masons.
Being but a new EA, I'm not quite sure what is available in England for a travelling brother. If there is anything masonically that I might due during my travel in addition to visit, I would be greatful for the advice. Either way, I again extend my thanks to you for your replies.

Moe/Mike
Further to my earlier reply there are a couple of masonic buildings you might want to visit while in London, the obvious one is Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden, Central London. This is the headquarters of UGLE and has an excellent museu and library - it is open to the public and well worth a visit. As is Mark Masons Hall near St James's Palace.

If do believe that freemasons hall is shut for refurbishment work throughout January and the first meeting possible is the 29th Jan.
Maybe a brother with more info can help on this

Seems I may have chosen the worst time to try and visit the UK!

yes indeed, our meeting on 8 January has been rescheduled for the 29th January...unfortunately I can't make it as I've already agreed to attend a Ladies' Festival in Bournemouth.

While you're in London, don't forget to visit the London Masonic Centre in Clerkenwell Green. It's where my lodge meets, and is a magnificent building.

This may be too late for you but if not please let me know.

Moe You take your FC on 15.11. and your MM at 13.12. Is your GL in a hurry? Or do you have lodge meetings every day? For us, it takes almost a year between we arrive at the next highest grade.... Just curious

Arrow - Thank you for the kind offer. Unfortunately,I don't think I'll be able to stay in the UK that late, as I have to return to class. Should the dates change, I will definately tak e you up on your offer!
Ingo - No, there is no particular hurry. American lodges typically meet once per month, if not more. Most GLs here require a candidate wait one full lunar month (28 days) between taking degrees. Frankly, I was shocked to learn how infrequently UK lodges meet. That said, I was originally supposed to take my MM degree in January due to the holidays, but my lodge was generous enough to arrange the ceremony in December so that I might be a MM during my travels.

Moe - we meet once a month, too. But half of the year we have two or even more meetings per month. There is a fixed day where every member has to join in. The other meetings - like instructions or just fraternal meetings with beer, wine and talks are less formal.
But anyway it takes at least 12 months before a member of our lodge can reach the next degree....

Depending on your circumstantial factors Moe,Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire are well within a cable-tow of Ockbrook.

Brother Adder,
I certainly wouldn't mind a small distance of travel in order to be able to experience an English Lodge. Anywhere reasonably near Ockbrook or within London would be great!
Are there lodges meeting early January in Nottinghamshire or Staffordshire?
