Tony. congratulations and well worth the wait for the fellowcraft degree opens up so much to the person who studies Thanks Staffs. Believe me, I'm in no hurry at all. There's been much to learn in the 1' and I want to assimilate as much as possible before moving on to the 2 nd. TG

There's more. After our Lodge of Rehearsal tonight, some of the senior Brethren were talking, over a glass of wine, about the 3rd Degree we're doing in October. I asked who we were doing the degree for, since we have no FCs in our Lodge at present. They said "How about you? You're ready for it." I nearly fell over. I'm doing my 2nd in September, and they are willing to raise me the following month?! I said no, and that I felt it was too soon. I don't want to be deprived of my Masonic "adolescence". But the temptation is great, and if I said "let's do it" at our meeting next week, it would be on. Some hard thinking to be done in the next seven days ...

Move at a pace that suits you and your desire for development, not anyone elses.

Oh, I know the temptation would be very, very great. But, please, yes, be your own best advocate and do this at your own pace. Also, I want to tell you, the second can be a tough time, much like adolescence. It has, in fact, been a degree I've hated very much. But I've come to believe it's worth it. And, if I had it to do over again, I'd say this time I've waited is well spent. Please let us know what you decide

Thanks for your words of wisdom guys, I greatly value your comments.
After I'd declined the offer of a speedy raising last night, one of the PMs said "Why not? Once you're raised you can be involved in everything." A little later another commented that someone (who is good at memorising ritual) like me, once raised, will be "dragged into everything". Makes me think that the improvement of our Lodge's ritual-delivery firepower is not the least of their reasons for wanting to raise me, and this is a big temptation too. I love ritual, and seeing it done poorly saddens me. A lot.

I'd say your lodge will need you as much later as they do now. This time is for you. Truly, if you don't feel ready, you should be your greatest advocate. For I've head many a Master lament, later, at succumbing to temptation. From your words posted here, I am in hopes it will not be this way with you.

The wisdom of what you say is self-evident, and I don't want to end up looking back with regret. Next year sometime, then, "if the good Lord's willin' and the creeks don't rise." Tony

Take your time, and do it at your pace, not what someone else wants, I was fortunate in that I took a couple of years to get my third, gave me loads of time to get used to things and feel comfortable in lodge.

Bro:. Tony,
Congratulations on your pending passing and more so still on the wisdom, maturity and strength of character you have displayed in declining the speedy raising.
It is your path, and you must walk it the way you feel it should be walked -- well done on standing your ground and us all a lesson in temperance. ;D

No Don't let them push you too quickly, you have a lifetime ahead of you, don't run before you can walk. And enjoy yourself!

My mind is made up on his, and I'm going to spend such time at FC as is necessary until I feel ready for the 3rd. Now, about this lifetime I have ahead of me ... I turn 50 next year. There's no rush though. It's interesting, in light of this discussion, to note that Walter Leslie Wilmshurst - considered by many a truly great Freemason - was initiated in December (1889), passed in January (1890), and raised the following month. Go for it. Take the 3rd degree, and the 13th degree....
Don't pretend this is operative masonry...
Take the degree, then spend the rest of your life trying to figure out what it was all about...
Don't try to be "worthy" of a degree.

Don't try to be "worthy" of a degree. Bro Dixie, it's not about pretending anything. I guess I'm the sort of person that wants to explore all the nooks and crannies along the way. A bit like our dear Bro Karen, a fine specimen of mus musculus who, through curiosity and long, patient exploration, comes to know intimately just about every nail and joint that holds the house together. One step at a time is plenty. That's where I'm coming from. Tony

Tony Bro Tony regarding your comment about ritual, every brother is different, and some can learn quicker than others , others might struggle more than others, but all brothers do try and give it a go, what in your eyes appears to be POOR! might in others be their best shot. We all put the time in to deliver ritual, as long as it comes from the heart, and the Bro has tried his best then that should be good enough for all. Ps i hope in time you don't become one of the TUT TUT Brigade, regards Mike
