I joined at the age of 32 in January 2005. About 18 months on, and am loving it. I am by far the youngest in my lodge, the next oldest being about 42. I think that the next oldest after that is 50+. Hopefully this will change over the next few years. Squared (Mark)

I guess I'm the oldster here; I was initiated in February 2005 at the tender age of 52. I wish I'd joined many years ago but I'm now starting through the offices and was appointed IG last night at our Installation. Initiated in April 2003, at age of 52 as well.

I was born 08/12/1958, was raised 12/2000, and this year (a week ago) I stepped down from the East in my Lodge. In doing research along these lines myself from prior periods of time I've found that most join the craft in their late 30's or early 40's. I find it interesting that many Grand Lodges want to attract even younger men while at the same time they don't seem to understand that historically younger men joining is an anomaly.
This board seems to be a bit different in that men in 20's and 30's appear to be joining in the same amount. I wonder if it might just be a factor of the general age of those using this forum.

Fraticello, macche' vecchio sei! Lo so, lo so, Giovanni [giovane] al cuore - anch'io. Well, I was 34; and boy, that felt old. But I'm 37 now, and it doesn't seem that old now. Even 37 doesn't seem so very old - not compared to 40 - gulp!

It's in any case better than to be "loved by the Gods".

I was 40. Took me a while to find Co-Masonry. I was lucky. I found it when I was 36. I think there isn't a best age for joining - it depends on the individual. Some people can join very young and be hard-working masons, and others won't get it whatever their age.

I was initiated in 1992 when I was 45 and I had the ultimate pleasure of initiating my own daughter when I was Master, she was 21 at the time. She was moved by the opera Parsifal to ask for initiation (in other words-no pressure from me to join).
My husband is also a Mason - Three in the family and all masons. I remember my Scottish Mason Father-in-law with a big grin on his face, scratching his head saying "I never thought I would see the day!".
(My husband, being a male craft mason and not a co-mason like myself, was unable to attend our daughter's initiation - something that caused some considerable pain to him.)

Hi Maat, I'm really sorry your husband could not attend. Was that because CoM would not allow him, OR 'HIS' lodge would not let him attend. Here in Christchurch NZ, we (CoM) have many associations with individual male craft who enjoy attending our 'special' ceremonies , like Installations, Initiations, plus 2nd & 3rd ~ they even join in the perambulations in the 3rd for those in the know. Last February 3 male craft attended my wife's Installation into the Chair, they had also been present when she was Initiated, when I was Master at the time. Both my twin brother and his wife had been CoMasons, but have now sadly decided not to continue. My granfather (father's side) was a male craft, but he died when my father was 5 yrs old ~ my father then attended a Masonic Widows school in England for the rest of his education. I now proudly wear my Grandfather's Past Mark Master's Jewel, as I also have been thru' the Mark Chair.
I do hope, with the increasing thawing in intersectional Masonry, that your husband may be able to attend your daughter's Raising and future Installation in the Chair.
Cheers, Hubert
