In Freemasonry man oft speaks about "Orient". What is it? a geographic place, such as a region of Asia, or, rather, a spiritual metaphor?

Is it not that London football club owned by the Boxing promoter Barry Hearn ? Leyton Orient ? Orient derives from a Latin word oriens meaning "east" (literally "rising sun").
So an Orient could be considered as a point or place from where (the sun or) Light can be expected to rise.

There is no absolute Orient, any place of this world has another one at its East.
I read that Hitler sent some archaeologists to Tibet, searching for Shamballah: they found nothing. The light should be searched within ourselves.

Whilst I do not rule out a metaphorical meaning, to me the term primarily denotes the location where my Lodge meets, which happens to be at Federation HQ in Surbiton. Subsequently, when I deliver greetings for my Lodge while visiting another Lodge, it is from "Lodge Light of Amen-Ra No 717, meeting in the Orient of Surbiton
The Order's HQ in Paris is referred to as "the Zenith of Paris" and is in some of our documentation defined right down to degrees longitude and latitude.

I always thought of it as a symbolic "East".
