Brethren, shall we pause a while and be of one accord to note those who are missing from this, our festive board ?
Shall we think of absent brethren, and take a draught of wine, and hope that they do likewise,at the very stroke of nine ?

By Ken Brown When you're seated at the table With your friends ,all fit and able, As after lodge you meet to wine and dine, Comes that hour that means the most When you drink the Special Toast- Do you think of them just once a month -at Nine ?
If you're always hale and hearty- "Life and Soul" of every party- Theres a little something you can surely do; Would, perhaps,it not be kind to Make a call-if you've a mind to- On a brother who's less fortunate than you ?
Even if you scarcely know him This small kindness you can show him- Though,to you,he may be only "Whats his name", None the less,he is your brother Just as much as any other- We're all players in the Great Fraternal Game !
If you only go to see him From some solitude you'll free him As you greet him in the true Masonic way ; If depressed and sad you find him, Help him put it all behind him- And bring a little sunshine to his day !

The hymn we sing for Absent Brethren is:
Architect in thy great mercy Hear our evening Prayer Keep our Brethren who are absent 'Neath thy care.
When in sorrow, when in danger When in loneliness; In Thy love look down & comfort Their distress.
Thou who are Supreme in Power Over land and sea Bless them, save them, guide them, keep them Near to thee
So mote it be.

Other local lodges use one or other of these:
Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep, Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea.
Great Architect of love and power, Our brethern shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire & foe, Protect them wheresoe'er they go; Thus evermore shall rise to Thee, Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

There are three of us who take turns with this -
THE NINE O'CLOCK TOAST
Peter J. Hobbs
If at nine o'clock you listen when around the festive board
If you listen very carefully with your hearts tuned in accord
You'll hear when in the west and south you're charged in fullest measure
Some distant voices calling "Brother, may I have the pleasures"
For at nine o'clock we greet you - no matter where we stand
We may be merely out of town, or in some far off land
With melting hearts and brimful eyes we'll steal a moment's leisure
To call our distant greeting "Brother may I have the pleasure?"
For we are bound together by a great eternal link
To drink from that Masonic cup from which we all may drink
Accept, Masonic Brethren, whose fellowship we treasure
That old Masonic challenge "Brother, may I have the pleasures"
