I have become engrossed in the straight razor scene.I remember always having a deep attraction and a deep fear of the open blade. About a year ago I decided to take the plunge.
I bought a cheap Chinese made razor first. The reason for this I figured i could learn how to hone and strop myself and if I ruined the blade so what?
This has worked out well as I did ruin my first one ;D Now, I have a pretty good amount of skill. So I rewarded myself with a fine German made DOVO Bismark and a high end Theirs Issard strop.
The level of the shave is just beyond measure. My skin stretching technique has gotten very good. I have not cut myself in 6 months and I have ever gotten to where I can successfully shave my head with the Bismark.
I have recently gotten a new USA made straight from Hart Steel. Anyone else into the single blade?

My friend buys old straight-edge razors from antique shops and builds new, awesome wooden handles for them. I've been shaving with a razor and cup for a few years now, and think it's great.

So your friend builds his own scales? I would love to see them.

I don't think he has any pictures on the internet or I'd show you. Sorry about that. He's quite the wood worker, but I don't know if he's got a site. I just talk to him at the coffee shop.

I just use Bic disposable razors. I hate shaving, and usually have three day stubble.

Those who hate shaving don't straight shave.
The ritual is my favorite part. The shave oil application. Then the warming of the lather. Th stropping of the blade. The hot towel, then the warm lather application. Then the shave. First pass, second pass then the cold rinse. Then the after shave application and the drying, stropping and oiling of the blade.
Heaven. ;D

This thread is about Open Blade Razors, it is not masonic that is why it is in Talking Chaff. Keep on subject or just ignore the thread.

I simply asked if the straight razor "scene" thread (Ive never heard of a straight razor scene) had anything to do with the straight edge videos that were posted in a different thread. While I assume that the above scolding is aimed at me, it would be helpful when you moderate to indicate who you are talking to.

Well, surely this topic is per definition NOT politically correct, as it, probably under couched terms, aims to exclude 50% of the world's population. Okay boys, calm down - that was me seriously taking the mickey. Harmony and Peace, anyone? Or perhaps even (*gasp*) Love and Unity ..? Only "politically correct" comments allowed? Censorship is an ugly practice, especially when couched in the dulcet tones of "harmony." If one can't have a discussion on a discussion board, what, pray tell, is the point?

Thanks, Brad, for making the topic admissible again. I wonder if all of the members of those sites have to be subject to those who ask them if they like to cut themselves? I wonder how they would regard the statement: I have become engrossed in the straight razor scene. I remember always having a deep attraction and a deep fear of the open blade. About a year ago I decided to take the plunge.

Why would a post about an innocent hobby be automaically considered "politically incorrect?"
