The Grand Orient of the United States of America will begin opening Spanish speaking lodges this summer. The first lodge will be in Washington D.C.. For more information about Spanish speaking lodges contact the Grand Orient through its web site. www.gomasons.org

Would it not make more sense to open the Spanish speaking Lodges in areas where Spanish is a more common language than in DC, say the American Southwest. And I assume you mean that these Lodges would offer translation of ritual spoken in Spanish and not that they would be entirely conducted in Spanish. The latter would seem to exclude a far greater number of potential Brethren than it would include.

It does seem rather silly on the surface but when you understand that the Spanish speaking brethren are in DC it makes more sense. DC is an international city and these brothers are diplomats from Spanish speaking countries.
This lodge will provide the Spanish rituals for other lodges in the USA. The rituals are being sent from South America.

Makes sense to me as long as there is enough Brethren currently that want or need this and enough to insure a continuity over time. Of course the Lodge in question could easily convert to an English or German speaking lodge with a small matter of a vote.
Go for it I say. I know some of the Masons in the DC area that would be hip to this.

I know of several Spanish-speaking lodges under the GL system, but this is a good thing.
