So what is the proper angle for the compasses?

345 triangle This gives an upper angle of twice 36.87 degrees : about 74 degrees. "Few Masons have any definite idea as to why the compasses are opened upon the Volume of the Sacred Law at an angle of 60 degrees." www.theeducator.ca/symbolism/an-angle-of-60-degrees-why/Freemasonry being a science there must be a means of testing which of those, if either, is correct.

So how do we know that 60 degrees is correct?
Is 60 degrees a cultural symbol?
Is there some fundamental metaphysical structure with which the compasses are supposed to resonate?
Does the correct angle vary, for example with the orientation of the compasses?

>Does not the Square & Compasses - properly configured - graphically say the same thing Rohde is saying about "the essential unity of the divine and human spirit?”
I belong to a Scottish lodge and the DC there also attends English lodges. So when setting up the lodge I asked him to turn around the S&C to the English orientation and asked if he could feel the difference.
He said he could. In the English configuration he said there was a tenseness while in the Scottish form there was a calmness.
Masonry being a science we could devise a similar experiment to test which opening of the compasses felt best in which degrees.
From there we might develop testable hypotheses about causes.

>To G or not to G? Isn't that simply a matter of Gnomonclature? I doubt it. Idries Shah tells us the that G is actually the Arabic Q. www.idriesshahfoundation.org/books/the-sufis/In his tradition there are 99 known names of their god and the 100th name is secret. The numeric value of Q is 100. Thus the so-called G hanging in the ceiling refers to the secret name and by analogy the lost word. In the context of Masonic Science the name/word is allegorical and in a semi-historical sense it is literal. The inclusion of the G into the S&C is recent. For example the G does not appear in the ancient Chinese use of the S&C.

In the Hindu system there are 7 planes and 5 electricities making a 12 fold system underpinning Existence. Are these seven planes the same as the seven chakras we learn of in yoga?

In this case the figure is an artist's depiction based on the relatively modern practice of placing an English letter in the centre. Of course if God is English then this makes complete sense. I've often wondered if the G means Gnosis? As well as the other meanings of course ;-)

Here's a classic image of a compass that many may have seen already. God the Geometer From the Letters of Telios de Lorca, 12th century mystic. Ref : teliosdelorca.yolasite.com/I've seen it many times before, but only just noticed what the Geometer (G) is measuring. It looks to me like a classic Mandlebrot Set.

There seems to have been a lot of posts deleted from this thread - thus my posts reply to nothing. >Are these seven planes the same as the seven chakras we learn of in yoga? The 7 planes resonate pretty well with the 7 chakras - thus the energy of the astral/emotional plane circulates through the solar plexus - with a layered structure focusing the subplanes >I've often wondered if the G means Gnosis? It is said to be so, but I am not convinced. Idries Shah says the G is actually the Arabic Q, rotated 90 degrees. The Q has numeric value of 100. 99 names of God are known and the 100th is secret - thus representing the Lost Word. >I've been pleasantly surprised to find references to the square and compasses in ancient Chinese literature. The FPoF are implicit in the imagery, and of course both a male and female thus engaged. What does this conceal? Meanwhile note that both characters are Nagas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C4%81gaNagas could change between human to snake form. Nagas are particularly associated with cobras. The Widow Isis was often represented by a cobra image. >Ye who are engaged in the pursuit of wisdom must also make use of the compass and square In Masonry we speculate rather than make use of. Masonic Science may however allow practical use.

>God the Geometer I think this is derived from an Egyptian depiction of 2 beings measuring the planet with string and dividers. A later version combines that with Ashur with the all-seeing eye flying over the land.

Here is Ashur The bow in this case starts to look like a triangle - suggesting dividers The circle around Ashur could represent a craft with the attached wings indicating that he is flying

The FPoF are implicit in the imagery, and of course both a male and female thus engaged. What does this conceal? Err, not sure. Perhaps the Chinese didn't have the same prejudices as olde-school lodge men? In which case, Masonic Lodges in China may be the way forward.

The Widow Isis was often represented by a cobra image. Doh! I just did something very stupid. Searching Google for "widow Isis" gave me results from a very different context. More fool me for not thinking of that before I searched. Makes me feel sorry for all the many organisations around Oxford in England that have Isis as part of their name (from the ancient name for the river Thames). Any direct links to relevant "widow Isis" content (in the MFOL context) would be appreciated.

"In Anderson's "Constitutions" of 1723, he states that "...[T]he Greater Pythagoras, prov'd the Author of the 47th Proposition of Euclid's first Book, which, if duly observ'd, is the Foundation of all Masonry, sacred, civil, and military...." This would be a simple statement apart from the phrase "if duly observ'd" and I have contemplated it for a long time. These may be relevant: Here is Isis with a throne on her head - being up one step she may be the JW. The Greek word Isis comes from the Egyptian Ast - meaning throne

Here are hieroglyphs for Isis The top hieroglyph reading from right to left exotericly is: goddess, bread, a sound like "ti", and a throne. Isis was very active in agriculture. The alternative hieroglyph reads: cobra, bread, "ti", and a throne. Isis was often depicted purely as a cobra - being a Naga www.thefullwiki.org/N%C4%81gaHere is the hieroglyph for Sirius - the brightest (blazing) star From the bottom right it reads: a star, bread, serpent's tooth. This of course has 2 connections to Isis (bread and serpent) , who was regarded as coming from Sirius.

So how do we know that 60 degrees is correct? Is 60 degrees a cultural symbol? Is there some fundamental metaphysical structure with which the compasses are supposed to resonate? Does the correct angle vary, for example with the orientation of the compasses? 60* is only for certain Degrees. 45 and 33 are 2 others used by different Degrees, for different Purposes. To answer the Original ? about the 8s on the Rule: Remember the tri-fold Rule? How we are to arrange our 24hr day into 3 equal parts? I feel that THIS (and the Esthetic reason) is why a 24" Square would have the Compass points cross at the 8s.
