It is an hypothesized transition from ape to man. As appears to be the case for all species, the proposed evolutionary sequence has missing links - stages that do not appear in the fossil record despite 150 years active search. The missing evidence in all proposed evolutionary sequences (both animal and vegetable) seems not to have discouraged the believers at all and the absence of "evolutionary" change for a billion years at a time does not induce any doubts. If you are interested in an evidence-based view here is a lecture entitled: Everything You Know Is Wrong. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe6DN1OoxjE

You had better ask the firemen. It is not a question upon which Freemasonry can cast light.

Perhaps there is a moral relationship to the image? i.e. We evolve from animals to become firefighters, fire being a Christian metaphor for sin or animal passion. Mind you, as a function of its ambiguity, the image may have memetic import related to the development and maintenance of group cohesion due - sort of like an inside joke that no one but your pals get.

Haha and did you actually asked them?
Those come in handy in all kind of circumstances and are mostly free of symbolism.
In need of a nickname than feel free and use it.
