If I tell, is it still occult?

The occult (from the Latin word occultus "clandestine, hidden, secret") is "knowledge of the hidden". In common English usage, occult refers to "knowledge of the paranormal", as opposed to "knowledge of the measurable", usually referred to as science.
---------------
There is a difference between know;edge of and not allowing that knowledge to be transfered.
If Knowledge does not trnasfer it is extinguish. Therefore ceases to be knowledge.

Yeah, I know, Just starting a discussion in a tongue in cheek way about the path being personal and divulging much makes it an ego driven "more esoteric than thou" thing.

I think that the 'more esoteric than thou'/viewing spirituality as a competition mentality is actually an extremely dangerous attachment to have when pursuing a deeper form of spirituality. I had that attachment at first and bad things followed.

So how did you overcome that mentality?

Probably a combination of getting a little older and the bad experience helped to show me the dangers of such an attachment. I think it's really just the attachment to fame (wanting to be a rock-star or something) but on a spiritual level. For a while I wanted to be like one of the occultists whose books I always used to read that lived during the late 1800s-early 1900s period. I just try to focus more on my personal journey rather than how others see my personal journey.

The "more esoteric than thou" belief is a distinct weakness that allows the human to be manipulated by other entities. For example: if you do this practice that I suggest then you will be even more superior!

But don't we all know some brethren who have a similar desire for "esoteric reward"? e.g. get enough Provincial Honours and you might be shown the Hidden Secrets. Looking outside themselves for reward, rather than rewarding themselves via inner contemplation. I found the distinction made clearer through Yoga. Especially Bhakti Yoga, where one expands one's ego in a natural and positive way, by including all and serving others. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhakti_yogaThis is quite different from some practices which try to suppress the ego. Which is hard to do in a Western culture that bombards people with egotistical messages. "You are all individuals, you are all special" (Life Of Brian reference)

It may be that the ego has a value to the enlightened human - but first it needs to be retrained.

"but first it needs to be retrained."
I agree, this seems to be at the core of quite a few esoteric traditions, so that the ego boundary is expanded from the small-ego of of the isolated individual through to identification with all of humanity, then the whole of the world, and onto the whole of the cosmos (the mega-ego). One might wonder, how does this happen? Depending on the personality and circumstances, that might happen gradually (the time-served Master) or suddenly in a flash of enlightenment (the Bhuddha).

I suspect that the "ego" is quite different from what is sometimes called the "Ego".
It may be worth reading Castaneda where Don Juan explains that the human mind is "a foreign installation".
That assertion is essentially correct but it is useful to distinguish in the uncontaminated human:
- the substance of the individual mind - the elemental intelligences of the individual mind - the intelligence that attempts to control the lower subplanes of the mind - the intelligence that attempts to control the higher subplanes of the mind.
In many humans the mind is rather fragmented and subject to interference so that there may be multiple other intelligences present both from fragmentation and from intrusion.

I have no problem with the idea that the human mind is "a foreign installation". The co-location of the mind with the brain is an assumption made by 99%+ of people because their optical perception comes from the brain direction. As I understand it (and I stand to be corrected) no neuroscientists have yet ever found any physical evidence for where the mind is.
Err, well, I did read Castaneda about 30 years ago, but have subsequently been disappointed to read the author (in rehab) say he was stoned out of his mind at the time and has no idea what he was writing about. Which is slightly different from my original experience, when I had no idea what he was writing about, but assumed it must be, like, wow, really special and cosmic man. (Young Ones reference)

>he was stoned out of his mind at the time and has no idea what he was writing about. I know a woman that used to go to his group in California. She said that most of the time he was ordinary but occasionally he was extraordinary. From my reading of his account of Don Juan, it seems that DJ did not really have a cosmic understanding with his perception going no further than the Eagle. Still I learned quite a lot including seeing my personal death behind my left shoulder. Here Leonardo has a more extensive perspective of the Eagle - having some sight of His extraterrestrial functions. The Eagle appears in the 30th degree and in some forms of the 18th - with appropriate confusion with "flying the eagle", an alchemical practice.
