It was brought up at a practice of opening on the third degree. Why do the deacons switch the staffs from one side of their bodies to the other as they move about the lodge. I have tried looking it up in the floor work and am unable to find the information.

We don't do that.
Some lodges have both deacons hold the wand in the right hand.
Other lodges have the wands in the left hand of left deacon and right hand of right deacon. That looks better in my view.

My teaching have always been the right. Only wsitch when giving a sign with the right hand.
Lodges have different customs.

Our deacons hardly ever give signs when holding their wands

We can only go by what we were taught.
Some traditions get watered down over time.
When addressing the WM any Officer should salute first.
If given an instruction then a Court Bow.
But I have watched as my Lodge slips out of these traditional ways, other Lodges may well be different.

That is certainly the usual position but it always seemed not quite right to me.
If Masonry is a science then surely it must progress.

Peter, you can not go by what you are not taught.
Is Freemasonry a science or is it the study of Science. A process of learning , to learn you must follow teachings.
But yes progress is good.

It is my experience that Freemasonry is demonstrating a science. For those that have eyes to see.
The symbols are the teachers, and each symbol asks those that seek a question. Each seeker must answer the question for himself... hence the 'free' in freemasonry. Remember the lesson of the Mark degree.
Progress is good and inevitable ... if not very slow at times.
->Peter, you can not go by what you are not taught.
Dare I say that this is where the Deacons come in... JD = In-tuition. The opening of the lodge indicates that what comes down from 'on high' is filtered down (transformed) till it reaches our Intellect in a form we recognise. Whether we take notice or not is another thing.
Physical science has already demonstrated that the 'teachings' can slow progress rather than expedite it.

We always keep the rod away from the craft or if passing on the PW the JD will have his staff on the left so the SD does not speak across the staff
