I would like to be a Freemason some day. But I know that mainstream Freemasonry doesn't allow girls to join. Only men can be Masons.
And so, I've always wondered what exactly makes a Mason, a Mason? A Penis or the Oaths? Or something else.
There are even women who join "irregular" lodges, where the lodge follows all the degrees and oaths and landmarks, except they let girls join, and such women Masons aren't "recognized" by the "regular" Masons as being "real" Masons.
What exactly makes a Mason, a Mason?

I have been a member of both male and mixed gender lodges. Generally the women are better at the spiritual aspects of Masonry.
The real test of a Masonic lodge is whether the greater Light enters the temple.
Brethren with some modest skill in Masonic Science can observe and even measure this. Having a paper charter from a Grand Lodge is of little consequence.
Long ago when I belonged to AMORC, I dreamed that I was in a very large hall with many different ritual groups, each sitting in their own group wearing their temple regalia. It seemed to me that the Grand Lodge distinctions made in the physical world did not apply out of the body.

Having participated in many Masonic initiations standing next to the candidate, I have observed that the good candidates bring the necessary inner planes sponsorship with them and thereby attract the liquid Light from on high. The majority of candidates do not acquire much by ritual.
Thus the Masonic degrees serve to portray some of the meaning of the inner plane initiations but at this time the inner plane events very rarely coincide with the lodge ritual. In 35 years I have seen the coincidence once. Eventually this will change at least for the first degree. The work however is always done by the candidate, usually over many years. Almost always all the ritual does is facilitate (by intent and geometry) the flow of Light to which the candidate is entitled.
I also note that most lodges do not attract too much Light these days. This is caused by the quality of the brethren and the turning of the cosmic cycle that is requiring the reinvention of most social and spiritual institutions. Useful humans are being freed from outdated structures so that they can build for the next cycle.
