There exists a concept that a Pelican, when no food can be found, will sacrifice itself for it's young by feeding them with it's own blood. This seems like a symbol that you would find somewhere, in a higher degree or lost rite. Can anybody think of any examples of where the pelican as a symbol of self-sacrifice is used??

Stash
You are quite right, in Rose Croix they use a Pelican in Symbolism; A Pelican in its Piety;
'The Pelican is a symbol of Christ our redeemer for as it is reputed to feed its young with its own blood to save them from death, so our saviour gave his blood to save us from death eternal'
And when you are Perfected into Rose Croix you are made a Knight of the Pelican & Eagle.

Stash 'The Pelican is a symbol of Christ our redeemer for as it is reputed to feed its young with its own blood to save them from death, so our saviour gave his blood to save us from death eternal' . Middlepillar, it is just those words that would cause me a big personal problem in that Degree. I can not accept anybody is my saviour I can not accept anybody gave their blood to save me from eternal death I cannot accept there is such a thing as eternal death I consider I am responsible for everything I do. As I consider you are responsible for everything you do ;D

Seeker The '.....' was to signify I was quoting part of the explanation of the ritual. I am more than happy for you to accept or not accept anything in any rituals of any orders, that is for you and only you to decide, I am only furnishing Stash with an answer to his question! I like what I like and I take from Masonry (and give where I can) what I want. And you are quite right I am responsible for everything I do!!

Sometimes I wish for a brieif moment I wasn't responsible for some of the things I have done - but the I wouldn't learn would I

I am a Christian (High Anglican) but consider that I am personally responsible for those of my actions performed of my own free will and accord and that I will answer for them at the Great Day of Judgement.
Seeker we all put different things into Freemasonry and get different things out in return. What may appeal to me may not be your thing, but that is one of the appeals and strengths of The Craft. The Christian Degrees may not be for you but there are other Higher Degrees such as Royal and Select Masters and Order of the Secret Monitor with beautiful stories to tell and important moral lessons to impart.

In my understanding the Pelican is a symbol for the Solar Logos - the Being Whose Body is the Solar System. He feeds us all by his radiations on all levels.
In the same way the 2 headed eagle beloved of far northern nations represents the Planetary Logos who looks both into the earth and out into the solar system. He is the One Initiator.
Both of these beings can be inspected in their roles through meditation. Ascending Jacobs Ladder (rising on the planes) will take you out where you can see them. If unskilled you might need a guide.
Best wishes
