It was Annie Besant and C.W.Leadbetter,both prominent Theosophists, who spread Co-Masonry across the english speaking globe. It has been falesly claimed that A.B. invented Co-Masonry. I could tell you more but I really can't be arsed.

(not my words)
Theosophists are those who inquire into the science of divine things. Many eminent Freemasons belonged to this class during the last century.(stash: this book was written early 1800s) The speculations of the Theosophists, however, were generally of a mystical character. Several Masonic systems were theosophical, as for example, the rites of Swedenborg, St Martin, Zinnendorff, etc.
Stash's words: I'm not sure that really helped me understand theosophy any better...but it's all my paper references have. If not many more posts appear, we'll have to hit up the www references

Co-Freemasonry started about 115 years ago in France under the banner of Le Droit Humain, when a woman, Marie Desraimes was initiated into one working under the Scotich rite.
My filing system is not up to scratch so I will complete thses details later.
Annie Besant did not originate it, but was instrumental in forming most of the Commonwealth lodges, being the head of the Order in England.
Leadbeatter on his visit and residence in Australia formed most of those Lodges there and in New Zealand.
Naturally, they being Theosophists, most early members came from that source.
