QUOTE: [Father Time that stands behind the Virgin counting the ringlets of her hair, as she weeps over the broken column. This may be an American account of the Widow Isis weeping over the pillar made from the tree that contains the body of Osiris]
It refers to the Planetary rulership of Capricorn, and one quarter of the heavens (read TAU CROSS) from VIRGO (the VIRGEN) until CAPRICORN, where the night-period is longest on the winter SOLSTICE.

So you do not consider the broken column relates to the tree containing the body of Osiris that was used for a column and then broken open to reveal his body - as recounted by Pike? www.sacred-texts.com/mas/md/md04.htmThere is also the peculiar practice of weeping for Tammuz: - Ezekiel 8:14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD; and behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. In Masonry, I often see the material that seems to have been later reshaped to fit additional meanings. This perhaps reflects the changing custody of the ancient mysteries.

The ANCIENT MYSTERIES all had an ASTRO-THEOSOPHICAL basis, including all the images of the "gods" and "goddesses" upon the ancient TEMPLE walls of the Egyptian Heirarchy. See the BEMBINE TABLET of ISIS, and the interpretations of M P Hall, Wescott and Levy.
That Masonry has a number of forms and imagery that conceal and also reveal the MYSTERIES, is appropriate for the general body of all Masons.

The ANCIENT MYSTERIES all had an ASTRO-THEOSOPHICAL basis... Is that the only basis?

These concepts extend from the mythical to astronomical, to creational/cosmological and very deep arcane MYSTERIES. It cannot be penetrated by the rational/intellectual mind alone.
