We seem to be over the worst of it - but if you are having problems, please comment.

All I have is Quick Reply; the Reply, Edit and Delete buttons seem to be missing, as are all the little icons indicating things like the sex of the poster, number of posts (that'll be the stars on the blink again), that kind of thing. If you right-click on them for Show Picture, they are replaced with a patch of blue Nothing.
Anyone else have this problem?

Let me start this message by mentioning to Admin. that I experience continual problems with attempting to use this forum, it is slow, freezes, messages cannot be posted after they are composed, etc. etc. And I'm sure I'm not the only one that this happens to. It is becoming frustrating (and time wasting too) to participate. I do not have these problems with any other forum. It also might account for a lack of postings on the various boards - folks just give up! I'm persistent but my patience is wearing thin. I am sorry to learn you are still encountering these problems. Occasionally the forum can be a little slow but generally this is but for a short while before it reverts to "normal." Today, for example, I personally have not experienced any drag or slowness, though I did the other day. The unfortunate thing is the speed of the forum is really out of our hands as there's nothing we can do when such problems crop up. I am curious now if others are also experiencing similar problems. To add to Leo's comments, one way to avoid having to retype is to copy the text of what you have written to the clipboard, to do this simply press the 'ctrl' and the 'a' keys at the same time, this should highlight the text in the reply area, then 'ctrl' and 'c' keys at the same time will copy it to the clipboard. If the post to the forum then fails you simply start your reply again, but this time in the reply box press 'ctrl' and 'v' at the same time and your text will be dropped in from the clipboard. These keystrokes will work for Internet explorer, some other browsers also support them. Architet, you dont mention what sort of a connection you have - is it dialup or high speed?

I'm occasionally having problems. Sometimes I get the index page okay, but get a 404 error when I click on recent posts or the latest post. I have high speed wireless.

This phenomenon isn't unique to just ProBoards. All forums at some point suffer from slow performance, at least in my experience.
A few days ago it was "dragging" a bit but everything seems to running normally now.

Architekt, there's no such thing as a free lunch and Proboards is a free service, the adverts which appear pay for it not the Forum Owner. I use it for my Forum "The Chequered Pavement", which is newer and has fewer members than MFOL, but I have never had any problems.
As Leo says, all Fora have times when they run slow and it is usualy owing to external factors such as the server, not the Forum owner or admin(s).

You gets what you pays for as they say and Pro-Boards is free. I would love to have my own server, tons of bandwidth etc, but I don't have that sort of cash.
As one who played a small part in the founding of this Forum some years ago but am now just an ordinary poster I am quite happy how it has developed and "by and large" with the work done, in their own time and for no financial reward, by the Admins and Mods. I feel that MFOL is a useful ambassador for all types of Freemasonry and I have learned far more from here than from the "Official" sources, and have made many friends (and a few enemies).
Ok, performance wise it's a Ford Transit not a Ferrari but it is free and not connected either to an on-line shop nor does it bow the knee to any Grand Lodge, Grand Orient, Obedience or does it need to be approved by any Grand Master or other satrap and long may it continue as such!
In the end if you don't like MFOL, leave! There are no doubt other Masonic Fora which load up far quicker and are more suited, or why not start your own as I have done?

I want to establish how big a problem performance actually is before we start adressing it. If it is only one person then it is far more likely to be down to individual pc and network conditions rather than the board as a whole. And it would be helpful if people could quantify what they mean by 'slow', as one person may feel that 5 seconds to load a page is slow, someone else may feel 30 seconds is slow.
Archie, if you feel that the performance of the forum prohibts you taking an active part then so be it, there are some things that are beyond the control of the staff, and performance is one of them. Unless we start charging for access (something I personally am not in favour of) then there is little we can do, the google ads are part of the pro-boards forum set up, we can remove the banner ads, but as I said, lets see if it is a real issue first.
Other forums platforms and models of operation are their concern, there are other masonic forums on pro-boards, you may not have discovered them yet. Pro-boards stats Number of boards hosted: 2,736,895 Number of registered users: 20,684,790 Number of threads created: 57,037,654 Number of posts made: 640,344,232
Which is enough to convince me they are offering a service that works

I am pleased to report that the service is perfect so far today. Perhaps the problems I have experienced were only temporary and just happen now and again for technical reasons. So far so good. Good to hear. And thanks for sticking in there during your connection difficulties.
