I'm more of a Hardware man but I found last night 21 Dec at 23.00 hours GMT that I had been logged off and I could not log back on, even after re-booting the PC. I waited about 30 minutes then the service came back with no problems.
As I use BTinternet, (ADSL) I assume that this ISP shut down for some reason yesterday between 13.00 and 23.00 hours?

hehe, gentlemen... the "BT" to which atarnaris is referring is BitTorrent, not British Telecom. One is reliable, the other is a telco. BitTorrent is a filesharing (P2P, peer-to-peer) mechanism developed by a chap who didn't like all the fluff, FUD and crud around P2P programmes like Kazaa, Napster (previous generation), eMule, eDonkey, etc. It's very simple (if not a little scary) in its implementation: you install it onto your machine and it acts like an Internet Exploder, err...Explorer plugin in that every time you click on a link that has a filename ending in .bittorrent (e.g. http://127.0.0.1/blah/film_du_jour.divx.bittorrent) it will kick off this plugin and begin downloading to the directory you choose, renaming it to the proper filename in the process (e.g. film_du_jour.mpg). But it will only work if you have your firewall set to allow whatever you're downloading to be shared via the relevant port(s). In the process of downloading the file, it will also allow anyone else downloading the same file to get whatever bits of the file it needs from your partially completely download. That is, instead of any one person downloading the file from any other one person; you're actually downloading one file from anywhere up to 1,000 people, all of whom will be at varying staged of download completion. Anyone familiar with Kazaa will know what I'm talking about. However, unlike Kazaa, once you have closed the BitTorrent download window, all sharing on that file stops. It means that you don't have a "shared folder". In programming terms, you're sharing a file handle with other users, not a directory. You did ask... Have a read of the official website for more information. I suspect the "not working" bit that atarnaris was referring to was the SuprNova.org site that most BT users seem to use. (NB: suprnova.com and suprnova.net are bad sites). Not taking any moral high ground here, but the reason I don't do P2P is that 90%+ of it seems to be illegal music, movies, software, etc. If you like the idea of the MPAA or RIAA abusing the 2003 amendments to UK-US extradition laws (see here and here) so you can be spirited away to America without a hearing, then be my guest. Edit: Added BT website

Thank you - I have been doing some research on this today, but work got in the way, thanks for the explanation. I'm not a p2p user either - not my bag.

i'm off to see National Treasure tonight. Let us know what it's like, please? Most of the films Cage appears in are fun and adventurous. I've seen the previews for NT and it looks good. Sean Bean a bad guy... who knew?! ;D I'm reserving opinion on the Masonic content, though. My thinking is that most Masons are overly sensitive about this issue in films. Just like when you go see a film about a virus outbreak with an epidemiologist and molecular geneticist (which I've done), who spend the entire film ripping its logic apart - some people are unwilling to suspend disbelief about their raison d'etre, no?
