I'm not the only one But you're the only one with hiking boots Great to see you back with us. Some advice with the kids; just push them out of the way! Always works for me ;D Steve, delighted you're fully on line as well. I have only ever experienced serious hard drive problems just the once in my life and beleive you me I lost so much stuff, months of work in fact, I never now let a day go by with out saving. Anytime there ever the hint of a problem I do a system restore. I have learned it's always a good idea to make regular restore dates.

Stewart, I hate to be a party pooper but the only way I see us ever having a "United States of Earth" would be as in the film "Independence Day" when tribal, religious, ethnic, hatreds would be set aside to combat a common foe, in this case an extra-terrestrial invader. Perhaps our only real foe is ourselves? But that is more for a thread on the Ruffians.

Back to computers. I have now got back to 99% capability. A few bells and whistles still to tweak. BT Yahoo Helpdesk were very good indeed when it came to getting back on line!
I am upgrading on 10th Feb to 1Meg Broadband, currently using 512K. This ought to speed things up a bit, more relevant for downloads than posting to BBs etc.
I have also bought a largish 250GB external HDD with backup software and I run that every day automatically.
Now all I need to do is buy the softward from Solar Phoenix to recover my data for the old HDD.

Steve, I'm delighted to see that you're almost 100 percent fully operational. It really does sound like you had a very nasty setback. Computers can be so frustrating and yet so wonderful at the same time. A very paradoxical situation, if there ever was one. Unfortunately broadband is not yet available in my area. I've heard it could be anything up to another two years away! Is broadband really that much faster than regular dial-up? Is anyone aware of a gaget I can buy that will help improve my dial up speed; something that I can attach between my computer and my telephone line? The problem is my main socket is out in the hallway. And when I connected directly into this I find that my dial up speed is so much faster. The unfortunate thing is I need to run an extension telephone cable so I can sit in comfort (I'm currently using a Toshiba satellite laptop) So, if I could get a gadget that would boost the signal along the extension cable, it would be almost like having broadband - especially in comparison to my current situation. I hope this is making sense.

My first foray into computers was an ATARI ST., being keen on games etc. That finally led me to the standard PC with 1 GIG Ram, 2.8 GIG engine., as I have to use it for ArchiCAD also. I don't surf much, not enough time!, but with this website I have had to increase my monthly hour payments schedule, just to read it all!!

Refused to buy either Sinclair ZX or Spectrum 48. I waited for the all singing, all dancing, no messing, extremely powerful Commodore 64!
Just got better .....

Still waiting for disk recovery software to retrieve old files etc but otherwise have all my capabilities back and as of now have 1.1 Mbps speed on ADSL . Doesn't really affect matters on a text based Forum such as this but it will be of interest to see if it enhances Downloads etc.
