I'm looking for three books by the Rev. J.T. Lawrence. They are "Masonic Jurisprudence", "'The Keystone' and other Essays on Freemasonry" and "The Chaplain’s and Organist’s Work". I'm especially eager to find the third of these.
Lawrence wrote at the beginning of the 20th Century (I understand he was active into the 1920s) and his work was popular mostly among Freemasons in UGLE lodges. These books have long been out of print and I've not been able to find them anywhere at any price.
Does anyone here have any ideas?

Thank you for the tip. I still haven't found the book I really, really want to read but, thanks to your tip, I've come upon a few others he wrote. He seemed to have been quite a prolific writer.
Thank you!! ;D

Mr. Mason, if I may trouble you, it's been suggested that I may be having trouble finding this particular volume because it may not be a book; rather, it may be an essay. Could you check your volumes and see if the Rev. Lawrence wrote an essay by this name? Thank you. Addendum:BTW, I'm on the verge of posting a bounty for this.

Hi Karen, I've checked all my books and can't find anything. It does sound like it could be an article as most of his books are made up of such. My contact has still not came up with it yet. I will be going to our Grand Lodge museum in the very near future and will look in the library there. If I find a copy of the work I'll make sure you get a copy to.

Well, I've got a wee bit of info. It was part of a series of 8 handbooks in the "Masonic Directories" collection by Lawrence, published by A. Lewis.
It was handbook No 7 and the series was advertised in his book "The Keystone and other Essay's"
The series was co-written by K. R. H. MacKenzie, so perhaps a search of him might prove fruitful.

Yup, the same advertisement was published in his "Masonic Jurisprudence" as well. Same in "Perfect Ashlar and Other Masonic Symbols", which he likewise co-wrote K. R. H. MacKenzie. Thank you for alerting me to MacKenzie, all this information and all your help and effort on my behalf. The initial search for MacKenzie didn't turn it up but I'll keep plugging away at this. I realize I real a LOT of books and I have so many on that high shelf that I can't read until after I'm raised and I should be patient but . . . I really, really, really want to read that book

K, I just came from Powell's of Chicago. There I spoke with a fellow who has seen this work (so he recalls). He said it's part of a folio of Lawrence's series of books about officers in the lodge. I also have been in contact with Lewis Masonic, the original pubisher, and they're keeping their eyes open for me. Kessinger says they have some of Lawrence's other work but not this volume, but that they'll think about it. So some tantalizing glimpses but I still can't put my finger to the book.
So I'm gonna do what I threatened: post a bounty.
I will pay $50US, plus photocopy expenses and reasonable shipping, for a photocopy of Lawrence and MacKenzie's "The Chaplain’s and Organist’s Work". I will pay $100US for the book itself (the book may be in any condition save that all pages be present and legible).
Thank you.

Karen, have you got a hold of this publication yet?
I was up a our Grand Chapter Installation yesterday but didn't have time to look through the library. I'll be up there again in the next 2/3 weeks definately and will hopefully find it.

Hi Karen, No problem, I got back from our Grand Lodge today at 4pm. I spent the morning looking through the books (all of them) and I'm sorry to say that it is one that they don't even have. Our librarian and curator even searched with me. I'll still keep my eyes out for it and I have a few brethren also looking out for it.
sorry!!!

Thank you very, very much for going to all this trouble for me.
It does puzzle me, though . . . I mean, it's got to be . . . somewhere . . .

Thank you for the links, Bro. Bill. But, I have all of these. And I've done the Google searches (I have about 40GB of Masonic literature I've downloaded from offline). I love the Internet and I've developed quite an affection for Kessinger yellow ;D But Lawrence's "The Chaplain’s and Organist’s Work" continues to elude me. As I've mentioned above, I've tried Google, various online used book sellers and rare book specialists. I posted the bounty above. I've also been in touch with Lewis Masonic (absolutely wonderful people) who originally published it. They don't even have a copy of the original and the fellow with whom I emailed didn't think much of my chances of finding it. But he's going to keep his eyes open for me So far, not a hint. It does puzzle me though . . . Lawrence's other work seems to be very readily available. Why should this one so completely disappear from the Earth?
