Or because they were people to "look up to"... Its crossed my mind as well. Especialy since its still a common term. Giants are still around modern times, the disorder (gigantism). Like Robert Wadlow: Who was also a freemason as well as a giant.

True, there are and have been "giants" in the medical sense, whose relative height is not much beyond what is simply considered tall (usually frail individuals with short lives). However, enthusiasts tend to take that reasonable concession as applying to mighty giants of fairy tale proportions.
