Hi, I'm a Nigerian. I'm a university student studying Law. My Uncle and Grandfather where both masons. I'm thinking of joining, and have already discussed it with my Dad and Uncle. Both advise I finish school first. The problem is I dont really understand the structure,e.g Lodges etc. My Uncle is in the Scottish Lodge...if I remember correctly and I've also met other masons of the English Lodge, they hold meetings together and my Uncle tells me that soon, Nigeria would have it's on Grand Lodge...whatever that means. Anyway, If I where to join, what are the benefits of each of these Lodges and their diffrence? Plus, what exactly would I be doing as an Apprentice, FellowCraft or Master Mason? What kind off responsibilities would I be required to fulfill. Also, My country is highly religious, recently there has been serious anti-mason campaigns by churches, going as far as stopping freemasons from partaking in communions and even attending church or holding church positions, even as far as refusing to hold burial services for a Mason's funeral. It's kind of sad seeing christians persecute a group of people like this, seeing how they where also persecuted at some point in history. Anyway, this has lead to a lot of anti-mason rumours, like Freemasons drink blood , perform human sacrifice, control the world/government... :(I would need an intelligent reply for people who ask sarcastic questions that imply my wish to take part in such acts probably for the sake of wealth. Please I'd be grateful for any help I get....
P.S I'd be through with school by 2011 after which I may have to travel out of the continent to study my Masters, I would like to join before I travel. So I'm wondering, if I travel as a Mason can I attend meetings where ever I plan to live, if yes do I have to register, pay dues etc...?
