Greetings!
I eke a living selling esoteric and occult books and, occasionally, artwork.
I have acquired some sets of three prints which were made over 40 years ago and are now available for sale. I would hope that my description of them might be of interest to some Freemasons, whether or not they are interested in purchasing them. The three prints are 35cm x 50cm and were made to highest standards using the offset litho printing process. The reproductions were made from the original hand painted tracing boards executed by Lady Frieda Harris c.1938.
She was a member of the co-masons. This masonic rite was founded at the end of the 19th Century. It was open to men and women, so was considered irregular by the United Grand Lodge of England. It came to be closely associated with the Theosophical Society. Whilst the rituals were performed very much as in mainstream masonry, those involved were very open to the idea that the ceremonies manipulated subtle energies, an approach which might appear strange to many mainstream freemasons. For instance it will be noted that the sword is given considerable prominence in the Entered Apprentice tracing board. This would be because aside from being the weapon by which the Tyler defends the proceedings, it also used by the initiator to transmit energy from the divine to the candidate.
It may be considered that the imaginative reworking of the tradition tracing board designs by Lady Harris might have been quite startling in the late 1930's. She may have felt she was revisioning masonic symbolism of a new era in humanity's spiritual endeavour. Certainly, the Theosophists with who she worked with in co-masonry regarded themselves at the forefront of human spiritual development. She also employed a new system of geometry in her artwork. This is called Projective Geometry. This originated from when, in the Renaissance, artists first started employing linear perspective. Traditional Euclidian geometry assumes parallel lines never meet. Projective Geometry accepts the perception that they do, at the infinitely distant horizon. Just as Euclidian geometry supports mystical speculation Goethe found a spiritual dimension in Projective Geometry, he inspired Rudolf Steiner and Rudolf Steiner's followers taught Lady Frieda Harris. The Entered Apprentice tracing board (I think) utilizes Projective Geometry to suggest the ladder transcends planes of reality.
The Fellow Craft tracing board is painted upon polar graph paper, as might be used by an astronomer to record astronomic events. Its guide lines being incorporated into the image.
Nowadays, Lady Frieda Harris is best know as the artist who painted the Crowley Thoth Tarot deck, one of the best known of the modern tarots. Aleister Crowley was her teacher though her teachers in Rudold Steiner's Anthroposophical Society and her fellow co-mason's whole heartedly disapproved of him. There was a resurgence of interest in Crowley in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Then the tarot pack was published and people discovered the artwork of Lady Frieda Harris. When her tracing boards appeared in an occult book dealers catalogue in 1975 they were purchased and a year later the prints that are for sale now were made. They have been stored all this time. They were never on display so there are no drawing pin holes or glue marks on the reverse. Nor any fading, though the printing process is very colour fast anyway.
