Many of you will know that one of my most persistent hobbies is chess, which I am fairly good at. I posted here once a now-dead link to a slightly deranged article about the connection between the pawn in a Jacques, Staunton chess set and the square and compasses. Although the link is dead, luckily I copied the lot at my own expense to a newsgroup, and it can be seen here: Staunton Chess Set and Freemasonry. But I saw another one the otehr day that is even betterm Many of you will know about St Reinold or Renaud, who was killed by jealous stonemasons during the building of Cologne Cathedral. There is quite a good resumé here: St. Reinold - A Murder and Three Mysteries. But St Reinold is apparently the same person as Renaud de Montauban, Wiki, and it was he who killed Charlemagne's nephew, Berthelot, following a quarrel over chess by zonking him on the head with a chess board. That's gotta hurt!
