Dear Brethren All, I was raised Master Mason In 2003 and was unattached for some years, before rejoining my present lodge. I am currently Junior Deacon and have been advised to advance to the Chair, however I am approaching 60 and have realised I will be 70 before receiving my honour. I do realise that I was unattached for some time and no fault but my own, but I have always felt that having to wait 7 years for the honour after being through the chair is a hell of a long time, and has tempered my ambition in the matter. Does any light blues brethren feel the same, or have I returned to the Craft too late. I welcome all comments, for and against, Thankyou.

If your motivation is for honours then perhaps there are deeper levels of meaning in Freemasonry that you have not yet identified. For example: what is the work of the MM?

Like you, Martyo, I was not too bothered about Provincial Honours.
Eight years after leaving the chair, of course, they turned up - or at least an offer turned up. I had to pay for it. I also had to buy a new apron - two new aprons really, a dress one and an undress one. I only bought the undress one at first but a few years later I splashed out on the dress one with the gold fringe.
When I first wore the undress regalia there was a definite sense of novelty. The apron was a refurbished second-hand apron so it was a bit battered. The collar was a waste of time: in the Lodge I was wearing two collars anyway, JW and Chaplain, so my own collar was superfluous. There was no point wearing it, as it would have been invisible if I did.
I am glad that I now wear the dark blues, but they are not important to me. There are many Masons I know who have swerved any type of honour. Some men simply do not like going through the chair. I hold them in equal esteem to all my Brethren.
Being promoted was also an excuse for a rather boring day out at UGLE. As soon as I got my Certificate I slipped out of a fire exit and went to the pub. It is a computer-printed A4 certificate and it cost about £25.
BTW, the reason I was promoted after 8 years is that UGLE trawled through my masonic history and found that I was in arrears at an old Chapter. I had to clear those up before I could be promoted. This was quite a fiddly thing to do.
