Question time!
My husband and I have been invited to attend a St John's Ceremony and Festive Board in Hexagon House - can anyone tell me what a St John's Ceremony is, and what happens during a Festive Board?
Thanks,
Cora - clearly showing her ignorance of all matters Masonic (and enjoying the learning curve)

i cant tell you what a St Johns ceremony is but i can give you the following.
The original Patron of Freemasonry. His feast day is celebrated on 24 June and continues to be celebrated by the Masonic Fraternity. John the Baptist was renowned for his preaching of virtue and repentance; this, coupled with his willingness to suffer martyrdom rather than betray his duty to his Master, make him a fit candidate for Patron of the Order of Freemasonry. The Grand Lodge of England was revived in 1717 on the feast day of St John the Baptist and continued to celebrate this festival for a number of years thereafter. Although the Grand Lodge of Scotland celebrates the Festival of St Andrew in November, many of her daughter lodges continue to recognize and celebrate the Festival of St John the Baptist. Scottish Freemasonry still recognizes the appellation of St Johns' Masonry.

Ah ... that's where I got confused; I had read about St John's Day being later in the year, not June.
Thanks!

CoraB You may like to consider the relationship between John the Baptist and the Templars. Try www.robertlomas.com/Books/openframesecondmessiah.htmlIf correct then John the Baptist is regarded as more important than Joshua ben Miriam. The 2 Sts John are the traditional patrons of Freemasonry for quite obscure reasons. Although in best Masonic tradition the veiling uses simple explanations. Cheers Russell

Another new dress on the way no doubt Then at the next do "oh i cant wear that one they saw itlast time " ah well siuppose ill have to get a new one ;D ;D ;D ;D Dress? Me? *LOL* Let me illustrate my amusement at this by means of something a colleague of mine said when I actually wore a skirt to work (and yes, that was a first) ... "Cora! You have LEGS!" ;D I'm not very typical of the female species, I'm afraid ... Gone entirely OT now - as for the ceremony, I will keep you guys posted! Cora

Pace Lee, (Staffs) but UGLE doesn't celebrate the Saints John or their Feasts all that much these days but Scottish Freemasonry still does I'm glad to say and St John features in many Scots Lodge Names.

I seem to recall that the Union of both the Antients and Moderns Grand Lodges took place on 27 December 1813. That day (27 Dec) is St John the Evangelists day. Just to add to all the confusion! Additionally, the two womens GLs in the UK do not admit men. It is my understanding that they are modelled on the UGLE workings, and use emulation ritual! ( Sorry about that Steve!) Both, Like UGLE are monogamous organisations i.e. single gender. Proton

Thanks, Cora - clearly showing her ignorance of all matters Masonic (and enjoying the learning curve) I am told there are special rituals for the two St John's Days in Netherlands Freemasonry. A long article about the Saints John may be seen at www.masonicdictionary.com/holysts.html
