This is a subject I have only recently started to get a grip on and enjoy, so imagine my delight when I came across this link for the book by ALBERT G. MACKEY, M. D., called: SYMBOLISM OF FREEMASONRY. Click here so see what I mean. Enjoy

This is First Class Leo. I recommend it to the New Brother or anyone who's interest extends further than the Bar after the Meeting or the Festive Board.

Thanks Steve. I was delighted to come across this find. It's things like this that make the whole idea the Internet such a marvellous tool.
I'm sure there are other such books available on the web and hopefully if others are as lucky, as I was, they''ll not keep them to themselves but share with us.

Pietre Stone's Review of Freemasonry is pretty well know (worldwide) as a resource for on-line masonic books. www.freemasons-freemasonry.com/Look down the right side of th page. GP

Great link, G.P.
I had actually visited this site before and I must admit I had forgotten about it. Shame on me! Having just visited it again I can see it is truly an invaluable source for Masonic literature; it has some genuinely well-written articles, etc and I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending frequent visits by all interested in such things.

Leonardo
Here is a quote from Mackey chapter 1
"The definition of Freemasonry that it is "a science of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols," has been so often quoted, that, were it not for its beauty, it would become wearisome. But this definition contains the exact principle that has just been enunciated. Freemasonry is a science - a philosophy - a system of doctrines which is taught, in a manner peculiar to itself, by allegories and symbols."
Notice that he says masonry is a Science of morality.
In modern masonry we veil that statement by substituting a "system of morality"
And having substituted System we no longer understand what is this masonic science that the ritual refers to
Cheers

Well pointed out, Russell. Is it not amazing how, when we change one word, we can alter a whole meaning and therefore come away with a different understanding?
