I feel that we sometimes get so deep into finding our own path in freemasonry forget one of the true purposes of Freemasonry and that is Charity and charitable work.
I was given a copy of the very first edition of our lodge newsletter that was published in December 1973
Below is an article by a brother who is now sadly deceased W.Bro STEVE MEANEY,I know he was mentor to one particular member of this forum and reading his words of thirty years ago it reminds us that these words are as prevalent today and that we must not forget the Charitable side of the craft and the good that is done, This is the article:
REMEMBER THOUGH THAT IT WAS WRITTEN THIRTY YEARS AGO !!!
Charity,Why do members of the craft place such an emphasis on this great quality? It is a fundamental part of beinga Mason. It is said to begin at home, but when we speak of this is more far-reaching.I have read that the craft looks after its own from the cradle to the grave.Obviously we do not disclose to the outside world the many aspects of our charitable commitment
An accusation frequently leveled at members of the Craft is that we only think of our own. This is not strictly true,as witness the revenue from investments donated to the Royal College of Physicians for research for the good of all mankind.Furthermore, many Lodges donate to non Masonic charities, such as orphanages,Homes for the Aged,Cancer Research and many others.Surely if people outside Masonry were to act towards their fellow men with the same feeling of fellowship, they would bring kindness and understanding to the less fortunate with whom they come in contact.
The Province deals with many requests for help of all kinds each year, and each request is dealt with speedily and sympathetically.Lodges should also share this burden and Brighthelmstone endeavours to do its share.
We have become a patronof The Royal Masonic Hospital in just Twelve Months from the original proposal. We have,as you will know taken two boys under our wing. One is still at school, the other has begun Further Education at a Technical College,We now have a further task to assist the Province in raising £500,000 towards the 1978 RMBI Festival. So when you see mecoming your way with my hand out I do so knowingly that the brother I approach is open hearted and open handed,Firstly to be benevolent and secondly,to fill the want.
