FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE
I received an interesting e-mail this week from Bro. Francis Dryden, the Secretary/Treasurer of Exemplar Lodge No. 175 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Thought you might find this of interest:
Tonight in Lodge we had a wonderful visitation from Bro. Alex Chevtchenko and his son Bro. Dmitri Chevtchenko from Orion Lodge No. 14 (not 15 as in the List of Lodges) in Moscow, Russia. Dmitri has been here in Edmonton for about 5 years going to the University of Alberta (located in Edmonton) and his Father is over for a visit. The story that Bro. Alex told, through his son as interpreter, was fascinating to say the least. To this day they are constantly bombarded by the Russian Orthodox Church who publish anti-Masonic books about the evils of Freemasonry and many members are sued in attempts (many successful) to ruin their business or career. His Lodge has about 10 members and they rely on visitors to make the Lodge perfect. They do have a small "temple" about 1,000 sq. ft. that they pay equivalent to $4.50/ sq.ft. for mostly from funds above and beyond their annual dues equivalent to about $250 USD per annum. To relate this further Tim, an Engineer (Alex' occupation) makes about $700 USD per month... Can you imagine if someone in North America suggested paying 1/3 of your monthly earnings for annual dues AND asked you to pay for the meeting place on top of that?... I should think a firing squad would appear and blow you away! The "temple" is so small, and only set for a meeting, that they go to a restaurant after to socialize... no fish fry or stale bread brown bag sandwiches there!
They sure cannot be called "cheapies" like their North American counterparts... especially those that never attend to Lodge. To witness their love of the Craft was one of the most touching Masonic moments I have had... by the way, they are returning in two weeks when we do a Second Degree and the Degree Team is really honed for this one... should prove interesting and another adventure for these two fine Brothers!
