Emotion is one key to unlocking altered states. In shamanistic based ritual, one can induce an altered state through drumming, dancing, etc. In Witchcraft, one can use emotion to "raise power," directing it towards a goal utilising Will, in combination with Intent.
Emotion is ony one component, and by itself may be inadequate, although it can manifest certain phenomena such as poltergiest activity, which seems to be telekenetic energy being manifested through the subconscious emotional state of young teens, paticularly girls.
Don't know that this needed it's own thread, though.

The energetics of the opening may be interesting.
For example some have armored emotional structures and need strong stimuli to open the gate - such as chronic dance, drugs, pain or deprivation
In some the armoring might be managed from mental levels so that stimuli might be needed to exhaust mental reserves so that emotions might be allowed to flow
And then there is the question as to what is experienced with flowing emotions. Can all emotional experiences be taken at face value?

In my experience, it is only when I become emotionally exhausted by my own efforts in a matter and hand 'the problem' over to higher powers that I experience altered states of consciousness which provide answers.
I think that the emotions are the fuel.. the difference between pondering and knocking...
