K, I've encountered few folks who are celebrating the New Year with eager anticipation of what the next 12 months might bring. Mostly it's been more like a barely concealed dread.
Well, here on the west coast in the US it's been 2009 for about 20 minutes. It's been 2009 there much longer.
So? How is it so far?

Bro Karen, I post herewith the last stanza from "To a Mouse" by that famous Scots poet Bro Robert Burns.
Still thou art blest, compar’d wi’ me The present only toucheth thee: But, Och! I backward cast my e’e. On prospects drear! An’ forward, tho’ I canna see, I guess an’ fear!
In these times of Economic uncertainty with three wars being fought as I type this, perhaps as Bro Burns puts it, the mouse is luckier than all of us?

So far so good, here in the Leo household.
I know from the news things are not as nice elsewhere, a quick look at any newspaper will tell you that. but here, so far so good.
I wish everyone the peace and happiness I am feeling and experiencing right now.
Happy New year!

Life is good. The past few months have made me realise how lucky Patrick and I are -- even though he is no longer able to work, we are managing well enough so far, and there is still room to tighten the belt. We -- family included -- had a sober Christmas compared to previous years, and the puritan in me likes it better that way. Just a token of affection and appreciation and an evening spent in each other's company, with a nice home made meal ... wonderful. I think it was the best Christmas I've had here in England to date. Yes, hard times are all around us, and it is not without reason that I speak of this Shelter for Humanity, but I feel more hopeful, more filled with love, light and compassion than I have ever felt before. Must be Bro:. Bill keeping the pressure on As long as we stand together, as a people, as humanity, we will be alright. Just you remember that, and work to it with whatever means you have, no matter how big or small.

A nondescript day. I have stayed in today and watched the telly or surfed the web.
One good point is that my father (aged 88) who was in hospital over Xmas, was allowed home yesterday so was able to see in the New Year in his own home.
How will things pan out? I honestly don't know. My biggest personal worry is job security, a fear that besets most people at this time.
On the World scene I hope that the Inauguration of Barack Obama as US President on the 20th of this month may lead to better things.

K, so far this is encouraging. If we can just keep the up the momentum for the entire year, we should be OK. But I'll be keeping my eye on y'all as you're deeper into 2009 than I am so you should be able to spot problems first. Bro. Steve, as for that Dude who over turned my house, then talked gibberish to me, despite my "murd'ring pattle" - which I know he heard - while I was chasing after my tea towels, linens and papers all blowing in the wind . . . what man in his right mind plows in winter? Anyway, it all worked out. I moved into his place that night, into the baseboards of his kitchen right under his stove. He never ever noticed me again, even when I snuggled with him in the middle of the night; and that was fine Bro. Wayne, congrats on the new grand child. No sign yet. Perhaps the wee one would rather be an Aquarius. They do seem to have more fun than us Capricorns.

Ah you are a Capricorn! That explains a great deal. My ex-wife was one. Leo and Capricorn, not a good mix!

Capricorn and Pisces ... the star signs of my two V. Ills. and m. beloved mentors. Throw a Gemini in the mix and you can imagine the, er, "fun" we have, sometimes!

Too much sad news so far.
Email from a young woman of 40 telling me she was just operated on for breast cancer and starts chemo in a few days.
Great niece's husband made redundant a few days after Christmas.
Phoned a friend today who went (hopefully) temporarily blind a couple of weeks ago - no answer or returned call - pray he was out doing something nice and not suffering.
Sorry to be so negative - its just how it is right now - tomorrow is another day - here's hoping!
Like the cheesy phone ad says folks - make the most of now.

Thanks - still no sign - 3 days late so far! The baby has missed her dad's birthday (yesterday) but might possibly make her gran's (my wife) on Wednesday I suppose Wayne

Oh, the happy anticipation Bro. Wayne. Have a virtual pint with us while you wait, K. You're going to post pictures, right? Bro. David, yes your 2009 does seem very discouraging so far. I like your approach to it ("make the most of now" sounds like very good advice). I'll keep all those folks you mentioned in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear David...
A story to pass onto your young friend who is facing chemo. True story.
My dear friend Val was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer when she was 60. She was given 4 months to live. She said it was a horrible time and her sons were in tears every time they looked at her.
Given that she is now 87 and still very much alive and on the go - I asked her what advice she would give to anyone facing her situation.
She said "Well dear, I tell them to do their chemo and all that, but the turning point for me was when I was really fed up one day. I looked down at the offending breast and told the cancer to JUST PISS OFF!"
;D ;D ;D I laughed that loud when she told me this story because she is a real lady in every way and those words were so out of character.
She told me that she has related that story to about 10 other women with the same problem over the years since - and they have all survived! The 3 I have told it to have all survived as well.
Hugs Maat

You ask how it's been so far?
COLD, damn cold. And the fire controls on my boiler quit on Sunday night...48 hours of manual start ups and shut downs at -13F got real old real fast. Takes a couple days to get the right, esoteric gas fittings out into the hinterlands!

Very pleasant here, very hot sun with extreme UV levels. Our hydro lakes are full and spilling water although we have a drought down our eastern seaboard. A tramper went missing in the Southern Alps a fortnight ago, we found her pack but not her, someone else missing in the bush for 11 days has been found safe and reasonably well
