Greg Goding of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland has come up with a radical new plan for increasing and RETAINING new members.
Warning: Not all will like it BUT - IT WORKS!
His lodge increased their membership by 78 people over the past several years and they have retained 65 of them!
He is currently in great demand by the various Grand Lodges around Australia and he was invited to go speak in New Zealand as well.
If you want to know more you will have to approach the UGLQ, I am sure they have a web page. The UGL of SA & NT are adopting his approach, it was announced at the Grand Installation on the weekend (wonderful occasion - gala dinner for 680 people and I have never seen so many grey and white hairs 'getting down' and 'dirty dancing' - I was gob smacked... LOVED IT!)

Ooops, sorry about that... one may have to address a letter to Greg himself c/- the UGLQ for more info. At least the address is there. So hard to contact and so many new members... makes it even more interesting.
I will see if I can find out more info for you.

I'm sure every Mason would like to know the remedy that has been discovered even if unorthodox. Indeed so. I know some Lodges (in LDH) have open days which have proven very helpful in attracting new members. I am sure this approach is also used by other Obediences, though.

Maat In July 2008 at the Australian & New Zealand Grand Masters Conference held in Sydney, RW Bro. Greg Goding PAGM from Queensland gave a presentation. Appointed by the Queensland Grand Master to address their membership “problem”, Greg gave a passionate address regarding the membership problem. Our Grand Master was so impressed he had Greg give an address to our jurisdiction on 11 February in the Chandelier Room.
Greg has been getting favourable and positive results from his methods to the degree that other Australasian jurisdictions have asked for his services to address their membership. Greg’s talk was directed at the issues which need to be addressed for the survival of Lodges.
There were five main points, shown below, that will be discussed and passed to all Lodges by the “Revive and Survive Team” that will be going into action in the near future.
1. Harmony 2. Business Part 3. Ritual 4. Festive Board 5. Cringe Factor S&F

How successful were they? If not successful to the same extent, why? There must be an 'X' factor that needs to be identified. Thanks for the further info Ricardo. Maat PS I do have a sneaking suspicion that the success is probably at the price of losing a good deal of 'the Mysteries', but there was not that much appreciation for that side of things anyway so far as I can see. Quality or quantity? Which is more beneficial - a lot of people who enjoy the companionship their lodges afford them and do good deeds or a handful of people who achieve, through their own hard work, an enlightened vision of the nature of physical manifestation and work according to its law ... among which we might include Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Zarathustra, (.... hey, where are the women? Mystery schools -nothings changed! )

Thank you for providing the link on this matter. It is worth reading but the contents are not particularly new information. These ideas have also been introduced a while ago in some other jurisdictions. Perhaps it is how the message is massaged ?! It seems those who have heard this speaker come away enthused.

I don't know if this is related to how they did it in Queensland, but about 15 years ago, at a Boy Scout function, me, a Mason, a Knight of Columbus, and a Forester were sitting discussing fraternal groups. The Knight and I lamented over the fact that membership in the Masons and Knights was declining. The Forester stated that the Foresters was at the time the only major fraternal group whose membership was increasing. When asked if he knew why that was he stated that they knew exactly why it was, they had done a study on it.
The reasons he gave were twofold:
1. Activities for members and their families and, more importantly,
2. They thanked, praised and otherwise gave positive feedback to their members no matter how little they contributed or how much they did. In other words, they made them feel good about belonging.
It made sense to me because my experience in the Masons there are too many people who like to get up and tell everyone how great they are and give very little credit to anyone else. All too often, it's all about them and their clique.
It may not be like that everywhere and that may not be the only solution to membership issues, but it is something to ponder.
