I have a hand made/carved Scottish KT gold ring which was made for me by a good friend, who is now in Australia. He was a scottish goldsmith and the ring was made from scottish gold several years ago. He also only made no more than 7 or 8 of these as they were too expensive to buy. The ring is approx 20 grammes in weight and can be used as a KT seal as the head is raised. It is enameled in all the correct colours as well.
Question is does anyone know a jeweller who could value it properly. Anyone I have taken it to just gives me a scrap value price.

I am sure there must be some good Jewelers in Edinburgh, not part of the big retail chain, who can undertake this work. Maybe GL of S can advise?

Steve, I've tried everywhere, Edin, Glas, all over. Because it is hand and Scottsh gold,(which i'm told is one of the purest) made none seen to know the real value. I forgot to say that it is 9ct, and that the valuation is purely for insurance purposes, as I would never sell it.

in Italy, at any Court, there is a list of experts who do expertises whenever requested by judges.
If it's the same in Scotland, you could look it up and find an expert.

Hi Mike, I have informed them that it is for insurance purposes, and also that it can never be replaced. I think it's because no one wants to put their name to the valuation for whatever reason. I also tried to contact my friend in Australia but he has moved a couple of times and is not know at his last address.
Gio, Not that I'm aware of.
Next time I'm down south I might take it with me and try and get it valued.

Interesting site - Bob, my seconder is a jeweller based in Farringdon, and I used to be a jeweller - many years ago.
The origin of the gold isn't a guide to purity as all gold is made into an alloy before being worked, i.e. 9/18/22ct. Welsh, Scottish and Irish gold isn't intrinsically worth more than any other type of gold, however, it does sound as if this piece has a valuable provenance, and would thus be worth more than the replacement value of the item, which is one of the criteria that valuers have to apply when calculating a valuation. Also it is very likely the metal will have to be tested to see what it is if it has not been assayed by a recognised office, this involves taking a small sample and testing it with acid. Let me know next time you're coming to London and we can go see my pal - I'd like to take a look at it out of sheer noseyness!

There is a chap on Buchanan Street that does all our Lodges jewellery, and should be able to give a valuation. His name is William Webster, and he is "up the close" next to Lush (just down from Gordon Street). You need to press the buzzer to get in.
2nd floor from memory, and the place looks a disaster when you get in, but he really knows his stuff. Be prepared for a long chat...

many thanks Harmony for that and you Mike for the site. Hopefully will get a result. Don't know when I'll be in Glasgow next though.

he is "up the close" next to LushSo that means he must have been very conveniently-placed when Lush used to be Henry Burton (Gents Outfitters). Speaking of City Centre locations, any of you know the name and address of the wee shop selling Goudielock books in the Toun? I keep getting the vaguest of directions: along Argyle Street to the pawnbrokers, round the corner and up the close. Sounds distinctly dodgy the way they describe it

Great to see you back Bro Ruff! I did see that you were on the other place for a while. Isn't there a Branch of Toye Kenning and Spencer in St Enoch Square on the Western Side opposite the Shopping Precinct where the Old Railway Station used to be? If so they may well sell those Ritual Books. All the mention of "up a close" reminds me of a wee song " Up a wee narrow close, just past Brig'ton Cross, there's the place that I love to call home...." I think you may know the rest of the lyrics Ruff.

Thanks for that Ruff,
unfortunatly Toye,Kenning pulled out of Glasgow some years ago. I used to order stuff from them and had to wait for it to be sent from Bedworth ,Warwickshire, to Glasgow then on to me. Easier to phone Bedworth direct( 02476 848890), and get them to send the stuff to your own address. I think that was one of the reasons they closed the shop. The only one left in Scotland is Victoria regalia in Edinburgh, (0131 225 3355), they might have the goudie ritual. If not Millennium Mark has it for £10.00 either in 1 book or the 4 small parts, (01942 728000). but as with all these retailers you can another £2.50 for postage.
Still it might save you shoe leather and from getting mugged,"up that wee narrow close".
