As the ancient Mark Masons made their mark as a form of identification to mark also where they had been in some ways does not graffiti "tabbing " of today in much the same way represent a type of mark or identification. If so do these graffitti artists and theyre tab marks portray a modern type of belief or is this me looking too deep. ??

I think you're looking into it too much.
THe ancient marks weren't there because they were so proud of their marks they wanted to show it off...it was to identify which pieces were placed where, kinda like a dot system on dominoes....these symbols didn't usually face any visible direction, unlike graffiti which is as in your face as possible

You can see these on kerbstones in Soho, London. They are not very old, so mason's marks must still be in use.

Precisely, the reason for the Mark was to identify who had done the work, both for payment of "wages" and the location of the item in the work. You could well see the chaos on a large cathedral if dozens of stones were cut, but no indication of which went where. A bit like our modern day modelling kits. You need a plan, by the architect/desiogner, with numbered parts so as to assemble a true replica.

I was wondering is this the origin of the term "A marked man/woman"?

Looking up "Mason Marks" in a masonic dictionary, the following stuck out to me..(I'm not typing out the whole entry, as I'm very pressed for time still)
".....the mark which was conferred upon the ancient craftsman was not arbitrary, but selected from a defined and well-understood series-- That the craftsman was not entitled to use any mark until his fitness had een tried, and he had proved himself well skilled in the use of the plumb, the level, and the square."
Now, more light upon this alleged "series" is something I am definetly interested in!!

Offramp, what were you doing in Soho - or shouldn't I ask Soho has certainly changed since I was young. Nearly every pub now seems to have a Royal Ark Mariners Lodge attached!

Each stone must keep its specificity and be able to be part of the building. "
