I only have experience knowing Orangemen in the Province of new Brunscwick. Canada; I do not know what it is like in Ireland, but in New Brunswick, nobody seems to have a problem distinguishing between the two. From where I sit, this all seems to me to be a tempest in a teapot.

These are your opinions to hold but if the GL in question though the OO to be Masonic they would not feel it OK for duel membership to be the norm. I understand where you're coming from but as things stand these orders are considered different enough for there not to be a problem. How can I explain the difference to candidates, or to John, Seamus, Sean and Gerry?

How can I explain the difference to candidates, or to John, Seamus, Sean and Gerry? One thing I know is it’s going to be difficult for any who harbour prejudices. However, I do appreciate where you are coming from but the situation is what it is: the OO is not considered Masonic by any GL I am aware of so there is no conflict according to the Orders involved. That's how I'd explain it.

How can I explain the difference to candidates, or to John, Seamus, Sean and Gerry? Is there, in Ireland, or any place else that you know of any controversy that the two organizations are related? If so I would just explain to any one that asks that two are not related and that many organizations adopt similar rituals and practices as the Masons but are not related. It is something the Order has been dealing with for centuries now. In the States we deal with rumours that the Ku Klux Klan and Satanic groups are Masonic organizations. Reasonable people will see the facts; unreasonable people will not under any circumstances. The latter will believe what they want to believe regardless...

The latter will believe what they want to believe regardless... Well said. It worth noting that there are Freemasons who are members of the Orange Order but also sit quite contentedly in a Masonic Lodge where there is a mixture from the both the Protestant and Catholic communities, demonstrating that Masonry is a uniting force.

Well said, Brother Leo. This is especially important to understand that since the Orange Order requires that its Brethren be not only Protestant, but that their families have been so since Reformation. yes. I would say getting those Brothers to sit with Catholic Brothers would indeed demonstrate that Freemasonry is a uniting force.

Thank you, Bro. LTI
This is no reflection on your comments but I have removed some other post as they were not positively contributing to an otherwise harmonious debate, and because of the new direction I have also decided to lock the topic altogether.
Thanks to everyone for your participation.
