Because these two terms and schools of thought come up in any discussion of esoteric Freemasonry, I decided I needed to know more. Can anyone recommend a beginner's level book or books on both. Id be greatly appreciative.

I think Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels is good for an introduction to Gnosticism. Another good introductory book is The Gnostic Religion by Jonas and The Secret Teachings of Jesus. Aside from the history, my preference is to reading from good translations of the original documents. The Nag Hammandi documents are useful to have. Good luck!
