website for Lodge Le Progres de l'Oceanie: www.lodgeleprogres.org/"On April 8, 1843, during a period of British occupation Joseph-Marie Le Tellier constituted Lodge Le Progres de l'Oceanie under the auspices of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of the Supreme Council of France in the store of Jules Dudoit, who was the French Consul at the time. Le Tellier was the Captain of the French Whaler "Ajax" and sailed it into Honolulu to have major repair work done on the vessel. This was the first Masonic Lodge to be constituted in Hawaii. In 1905, Lodge Le Progres de l'Oceanie transferred its allegiance to the Grand Lodge of California." It was later a founding Lodge of the GL of Hawaii. An old ritual of this Lodge has been published in the last decade or so by the North California Lodge of Research, and another version earlier by the Grand College of Rites (USA). Prior to 1843, Le Tellier was involved in a French settlement at Akaroa, on the Banks Peninsula, in the heart of an extinct volcano close to present-day Christchurch, New Zealand: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akaroa. The French held Masonic meetings at Akaroa a little before the first meeting in Hawaii: www.phoenixlodge.org.nz/history.html. These seem to have been on board ship, as happened when the French visited Sydney, Australia, forty years earlier in the first decade of the 1800's.
