I was at a meeting the other week (Instalation) and as the brethern were being called up it suddenly dawned on me that one of the brethern had been put/jumped above 3 others in the pecking order by the new WM. At the Festive board i was sitting next to the secretary and inquired as to the jump by this brother, and he said he spoke to the WM about progression, and the WM was insistant that this brother took the office in question, above those who were senior, and qualified. It turns out that this brother is part of a body as is the WM! and has only been in for 18 months! This has left a bad taste in my mouth, in all my years in Freemasonry i haven't come across this before. My friend just shrugged his shoulders, and said so what, if thats what they want to do let them get on with it. Steve F might want to comment as this was not a craft meeting., and i think that he may be in this degree?

I have only seen something similar occur on two occasions, and in each case, I thought that the Master made the right - and difficult - decision, of effectively not 'promoting' a officer in the come-to-be-expected 'normal' progression towards the Master's Chair.
In some ways, of course, the report here appears to have differences, in that what appears to be a 'friend' of the installed master was promoted above what the Lodge could reasonably expect.
Still, strictly speaking, it is up to the Master to nominate his or her own ritualistic team, except for those positions that are voted on by the Lodge, or there by right of order (IPM).
This is where the Master does need to be sensitive to the Lodge: I see the Master certainly as the 'ruler' of the Lodge, but also its Master servant!

PM me the Order in question, not necessarily the actual Lodge, Chapter, Conclave or whatever.

PM me the Order in question, not necessarily the actual Lodge, Chapter, Conclave or whatever. What is the Secret about what Order it is? Mike, How can we comment fully without having the whole story? On the surface it seems to be a bad move, but rhere are always reasons that maybe you do not know?

As JMD states, it is up to the Master to nominate his own officers and not just necessarily accept the progression pecking order. Too often Brethren accept office when they do not want it or are not ready for it. Admittedly, bouncing friends up the list is not on, but progression just because of the pecking order should not be assumed and would probably make for a better Lodge if it was not strictly adhered to.

Very different from Scotland. Each officer is proposed and seconded by 2 of the brethren and the RWM asks if there are any other nominations for each office. If "no" then that brother is elected and if "yes" then a vote is taken. The RWM only selects his Depute and Substitute Masters.
In all the other orders that I'm in it is usually the standing committee that decides the names to go forward and then puts all the info to the body of the chapter, preceptory, etc, at the next meeting. If someone disagrees then again a vote is taken.

I saw something similar, where the new WM of a Craft Lodge ignored the progressive line and appointed his mates over the top of other brethren. It caused problems resulting in several resignations.
Not a good idea imo.

I thought this was a forum for discussion not PM's to see what others think. if that was the case, why post the thread?
