I was SS at a FC degree last night, and was outside having a sly beer and the WM came right up to me and put his arm around me and asked me to sit in the East for the EA Degree in about 6 weeks. I am honored and shocked,I know I can do it but there is always that aspect of self doubt that keeps creeping in. ps. Ive only been a MM for 6 months.

>in the East
Normally the East is reserved for installed Masters including the Master of the Lodge and the Immediate Past Master
Or do you have some other arrangement?
cheers

"in the East" means any time you sit in the WM chair, whether its to put on a degree or doing your year as WM.

In our Lodge each officer moves up 3 chairs for an EA degree, 2 chairs for a FC and 1 chair for a MM.
This way our younger officers get experience for the future.
We are very blessed in that we have many new MM and all young guys in the chairs. We don't have to recycle PMs to fill the chairs.
As to who sits in the East. We are taught that the men who sit in the chair is just a place holder so to speak. The "immovable jewels remain in place".
Many times if the WM goes down to the floor to do a proficiency or for other floor work he will "pass the hat" to another brother.

I have been attending my Lodge for about one year. I do not know of any degrees where the WM has sat in the East during a degree. They try to involve everyone when doing degrees.I am the only officer who has not been the Master for at least one degree. We also are fortunate that we don't have to recycle PM's to fill the chairs. The GL of Florida states that the JW,SW & SD should sit in the East for at least one degree.

Ah! the variety that finds expression in world Freemasonry!
In our constitution, the only brother who has not been regularly installed in the Chair to be allowed in the East is the Chaplain (who may be below the 'grade' of an installed master).

In my lodge we have candidates for almost all meetings so that with that rule an officer would sit in his own chair twice in his term - the installation and perhaps one meeting without a candidate

The WM always sits in the East for stated communications (business meetings) first and third Thursday.
Degree nights are the second and forth Thursdays and are "called" communications.

I have done an EA degree from the chair at an LOI before. Amazing how you thought that you knew it but then quickly realise otherwise
