In a fascinating essay written in 1896, the Freemason J.E. Thomas of South Africa wrote:
To assist in the ceremonial duties of the Lodge without seeking
to unfold the symbolism, is to remain satisfied with the externals
only, those husks which envelope and protect the grain. Our quest
is to ascertain the internal truths of which symbolism is but the
index. For instance, to what extent are the fraternal relations
between my fellow Freemasons and myself different to those which
I hold with my neighbours and friends? Is this a rhetorical question only, or please share your insights..

It appears that we don't like to take Masonic philosophy to its logical conclusions.

For me this means that Freemasonry gives us the picture with only the outline drawn. What colors we choose to paint her are up to us.

This seems to be a reference to the internal energy and relationship structure that forms within a spiritual group
Thus the group when properly formed develops a group light body and attracts an ensouling entity
At that point the brethren of that group are able to operate jointly in new ways - for example by instinctively understanding who should do what and when. On occasions a physical version of this can be observed in a sports team

At my Annual Inspection when I was Master of my Lodge, we were being inspected in the MM degree. We had done some real good practice and were operating like a well oiled machine. The night of inspection, in our little lodge, we had over 100 in attendance, PMWGM, PDDGM's and such, due to the Inspecting Deputy retiring, it was his last inspection so we made a big deal of it.
The second section, in which I emulated KS, transpired in a haze to me. I seemed to really have taken to the roll, lost site of all the visitors in the tight quarters, and the whole FC Team, officers and myself had seemed to get lost in a haze while unfolding the degree, after relating the 5 pts o flwshp, turned and faced the east, I turned to my chaplain and told him I was spent and the hell just happened..... I was in a funk the rest of the ceremony(thank god my duties were done) and just revelled in what had happened....It was a spiritual experience for all involved, it really seemed like we were at the grave.....it all had seemed so real......
