I have noticed when attending some craft meetings that the WM sometimes takes wine with members of Royal Arch. Although i understand that RA is supposed to be an extension of Craft what on Earth has it got to do with a Craft Festive Board meeting. I find this practice creeping in and to be honest is one that i totally abohrr. If this is the case then why not take wine with members of Mark and any other order that the WM may be in or is it just a way to find out who is in RA. If i were in RA i would not rise to take wine in these cie#rcvumstances as i personally feel that it is not appropriate at a craft FB. Any other opinions please

Lee, I notice you said when attending 'some' Craft meetings. Could it just be local custom at certain lodges? I am sure we all have one or two idiosyncrasies within our interpretation of the ritual, both in the lodge and at the festive board.

You must remember that The Royal Arch is the only other order that is administered By Grand Lodge. (UGLE) The fact is a lot of Craft Lodges have a Royal Arch Chapter 'attached' to them. In fact you cannot form a new Chapter unless you are attached to a Lodge. For example my French Chapter is 'The Jeanne d'Arc Chapter No 5' which is the same name & number as my French Lodge.
So it is often the custom to take wine with members of Royal Arch, in The Mark Degree you often take wine with the Members of the RAM (Royal Ark Mariners) Because like Craft & Chapter The Ram is intrinsically linked with The Mark.

When I was in The Chair I did on one occasion actually add to that toast, "... and with Members of other Masonic Orders" . A few old foggies did "Tut Tut" but I wasn't bothered about them.
I hope this custom ceases when English RA is at last no longer stated to be "The Third Degree Completed". Alternatively, let the WM take wine with other Masonic Orders if he so desires.
