"To see the lodge closed tyled - Direct that that duty be done' The inner Guard is the Etheric Double of the Tyler. So what is the Symbolism here? For a starter - The first requisite when we are about to do a great piece of work is to concentrate upon it - so we must be free of interuption, so the fortress of Mansoul needs a strong wall all around outside and our entrance must be well guarded. Therefore Spirit calls to the intelligence, which is the link with the lower worlds; the intelligence asks the etheric double, who in turn signals the dense physical body to know how things look from the outside, and receives the satisfactory reply that all the defences are in order, so that the Spirit is reassured on the important point that the Lodge may labour in safety - Each one of us has to tyle our own Lodge on various levels......... Anybody care to add to the symbolism of the close tyled Lodge

whistler, with respect, you are asking Freemasons on here (imho) to reveal parts of our ceremony to a non-mason, and you shouldn't be asking these types of questions. I know that you are a Co-Mason and i respect that, but please do not lead those that are new to Freemasonry to reveal parts of our ceremony that are not for your eyes. This and other sites are great for debate, but i have thought for some time that you are trying to get us to reveal our degrees to you. If you want to join then ask Keith, (who i have the grearest respect for,) to give you more info, regards Mike

Mike With due respect Whistler is asking for an interpretation of the symbolism of the meaning 'Closed Tyled' This is a pretty straight forward question. There is absolutely nothing secret in this, I am sure all Co-Masonidc Lodges and Ladies only Lodges do this at the end of thier meetings and if they dont they would probably do something very similar. IMHO There is nothing wrong with this question and it certainly does not encourage younger brethren from giving away anything they have obligated themselves not to. And with reference to asking Whistler to ask Keith about joining regular masonry, Are you away with the fairies? Whistler For myself I see it as a symbolic 'Locking up' and what one sees physically of course one would immediatley do spiritually, simply a symbolic locking up of our secrets. Although at the point it occurs there still remains work to be done but as in most things the preperation is most important, and this simple act puts the whole Lodge on 'alert' for the closing of the meeting and return to our mundane business

Middlepillar- Thank you MikeIPM - it would be nice if we could stay with the subject rather than the author. Middlepillar - Yes Co-freemasons use very similar words with the same intent when the close the lodge. My original Post suggested the interaction between the officer inside the Lodge the Inner Guard and the outer Guard - on an esoteric level, to preserve the secrets of the Craft. _ Everybody Knows Freemasons like to keep their Secrets. On an etheric level each on of us has to tyle our own lodge on various levels - over thousands of years of past evolution man has been learning to build a strong shell for himslef, so that within it he may grow into a powerful centre capable of radiating spiritual force upon his fellows, Inevitabally in the early stages of growth he becomes a self centered being, thinking and caring only for his own interests - tyling his Lodge indeed, but shutting out much from it that is noble and beautiful. Only by degrees does he learn that power is given for him to use in the service of others, and while he must so tyle his Lodge as always to maintain the strong centre of consciousness which he has been at such pains to create, he must at the same time watch ceaselessly to see the force generated in that centre is employed only in the helping of mankind is servcie. The man does not lose his individuality and initiative, but he learns to use them rightly.. In essence we tyle our Lodge to concentrate on our work. No big deal here - obvious really, we all wish we could lock ourselves away at some time to study without disturbance.
More still there is the mental body physical body the Astral Body to think about .
As to being secret -- explain the concept of Tyling - then ask Leo, or Stewart their views----
Re-reading your post..Middlepillar In a Comasonic Lodge We tightly Tyle the Lodge at the begining of each meeting for reasons given above. At the end of the Lodge we Tyle ourselves with our Masonic works protected within our being - then we untyle the Lodge as there is know longer Masonic work being performed done.

I'm with Middlepillar on this one. Tyling is NOT a Sign , Token or Word, which in all the several Degrees and Orders are what I swore to keep secret, to Hele within my Heart. The idea of Tyling and the expression "The Tyler" is NOT unique to Freemasonry, other societies use it and have such a person to guard their door against entry by those not duly qualified.
I myself am Tyler to my London Lodge, people such as the waitresses and barmaids who are NOT Freemasons will see me outside the door of the Lodge in full regalia. Some probably know what I am doing there.
Regarding the reasons behind Tyling and any Esoteric aspects I would say that M.P. and Whistler have explained that one between them better than I could do.

Away with the Fairies Keith i think comes from whistlers part of the world, and is on another forum, and i think this one. Taylorsman i'm surprised your not tyling more often as you are in short supply! Whistler how much Does Co-masonry mirror Freemasonry? as there seems to be a lot of similar words & Tokens, regards Mike.

Mike, Malecraft Freemasonry is very like Co-masonry, I know this from talking with many of the Malecraft Freemasons who visit us. Yes there are a few differences as there are between various Malecraft rituals... If you ever found your self attending a Co-mason Lodge you would not feel a stranger, what may alarm - you would be welcomed. ;D

In point of fact, the Inner Guard is a fairly recent (i.e., a couple of centuries' worth) innovation. When Masonic Lodges started meeting in big halls, it was a bit much to expect the Junior Deacon to wachle all the way across the floor just to give the door a ceremonial rattle, so the IG was born. This is perhaps why the Outer Guard has been so called, paired with the Inner, the way the Deacons and Wardens are paired, but why the IG doesn't have a separate title as the Tyler does, like Butler or whatever.

Obviously freemasonry had a begining and developed over time to include all the fundamental OFFICES, so as to correctly function as a repository of "spiritual" knowledge.
As whistler has indicated, the position of Outer & Inner Guard have developed both physically (see the ritual) and etherically/astrally to provide that most important of ALL masonic disciplines - DISCRIMINATION.
If you'r going to have secrets, you've got to protect 'em!
The same with personal/spiritual existence. A truly free compasionate world would be fully OPEN, but we live in a usury realm where some would take advantage, even to the extent of self harm.
Our "secrets" are to train the altuistic and keep the ignorant from harm.
