My grandfather, on my mother's side, fought for the UK in the 1914/1918 War. He lived through it. Others weren't so fortunate. If your relative was among those who died you may wish to check out this site. It is simply amazing.

A Great Site thanks Leo,
Doesn't it remind you just how utterly stupid war is,
I am always reminded of the saying Old men Make War Middle aged men send their sons to fight them
Also Remember the bit in Blackadder, when the Tommies weren't allowed to go up out of the trenches untill the whistle was blown, other wise the enemy wouldn't know they were coming.
Another war time Trivia, that took place during the Maori Wars. For the Warriors fighting was honourable, on one occasion the British were encircled and ran out of ammunition, The Maori Chief stopped the fighting, shared some of his ammo, with the British and the returned to the battle.i ;D

There is a Lodge, founded I believe by Bro Rudyard Kipling, called, "Builders of the Silent Cities" which was for employees of the War Graves Commission after WW1 and is still going.

And Blackadder Goes Forth, which you mention, is a master piece. The guys, Rowan Atkinson and Ritchard Curtis, make a great team. imo. What you said about the Maori chief just goes to show how wrong we can be about people. If the boot were on the other foot, so to speak, would this happen? Steve write: "There is a Lodge, founded I believe by Bro Rudyard Kipling, called, "Builders of the Silent Cities" which was for employees of the War Graves Commission after WW1 and is still going. " A great way to help keep the memories of of what happened alive. Glad to hear it's sill going on.

It is my understanding after visits to Picardie near the Somme Battlefield that the first Builders of the Silent Cities Lodge No 12, was opened in St Olmer, France, under the GLNF, in the 1920's. Subsequently another lodge was formed with the same name Builders of the Silent Cities Lodge No 4948, in London. I would not like to speculate which lodge was opened first, it may well be that the two lodges were formed within a year or two of each other. But the titles are very descriptive particularly when one has visited such sites and sees row upon row of memorials to individuals who lost their lives during the Great War. Proton

Hi Proton, welcome to the forum. I have also made a visit to the Somme region to learn more about what went on there. My wife and I did a tour of the place. I would like to return again. My granddad faught there but was one of the lucky one to make it back alive and in fairly good health. He was one of many Irish men who inlisted to help out Britain at that time.

www.lodgeroomuk.com/message.htmAnyone interested in War Stories may like to view my current editors article , which was written on Rememberance Day. Its about my Dad and Grandad. I have mentioned before , but I am looking for material for a series of Articles on Freemasons during War time, so I would be very happy to receive any information or details of anyone who has a story to tell. I am quite willing to travel.
